Stacy Cay makes a reasonable point (albeit with bad examples) about why authoritarian governments are usually incompetent. While doing so Stacy ironically fails to notice that the same phenomenon accounts for much of the beliefs and behavior of trans people:

As Stacy types this, an astounding number of transwomen are walking around believing that that they pass, that their outfit and makeup look great, that the majority of people they interact with believe in their true "gender identity," and that women accept them and do not find them creepy, due to the fact that the people around them will face negative consequences if they speak the truth.
No one is getting thrown out of a helicopter, sure (although let's face it, plenty of AGPs would do that to noncompliant women if they could get away with it) but criticism or honesty towards a transwoman can still result in job loss, social exclusion, harassment, legal consequences in some countries, sometimes even physical violence. It's not worth the effort. So people keep quiet.
At the same time, transwomen are surrounded by people in their own group who consistently lie to them about their appearance for reasons I find unfathomable (wanting to feel better about their own looks? Autism? Pity?). I found these all within two minutes:

The result is massive levels of self-delusion that leaves them (in Stacy's own words) looking like absolute clowns.
