Ordinarily the system works based on time. If a person with a thread commits suicide and you posted in it within two months leading up to their death, you get a point. You get a bonus if you wrote the thread or they explicitly mentioned you.

There's even a leaderboard, seen here. It's updated annually. Once again, you can't access it unless you have a point, but #1 right now is @Just A Butt.
