I would say normal for those who are in labor and those who have given birth. Other surgeries ? I don’t know. I know there’s visiting hours. And ICU is the most strict about it
However for a basic surgery I don’t know if they’re let someone be in the patients room the whole time ?

Editing not to double post - I’m sure the driving recommendation is the same. My own doctor told me that I couldn’t drive after my c sections until he cleared me..apparently also your insurance won’t be liable for you if there’s an accident? I can’t remember exactly what he said

Just had a thought - here in the UK they generally don't let you drive yourself home after having surgery. Are they happy to do that in BurgerFreedomland? Also I just looked it up and they recommend you don't drive for 3-8 weeks even after a laparoscopic hysterectomy because you need to be able to do an emergency stop without literally spilling your guts.

I'm sure Joh probably drives when he shouldn't if he has to so this is probably completely moot but still

Labour is different (and for end of life care) but for normal routine surgeries it just seems weird.

I know it happens in some countries without a decent health infrastructure where hospitals provide medical care only but the family is expected to provide day to day care like washing/clean bedding/food and so on but this is the US & I can't for one moment imagine that any hospital is going to be happy having random relatives wandering around & cluttering up rooms.

I don't think she's discussed this plan with the hospital at all and I'm looking forward to some major chimping out when they're told in no uncertain terms that Joshies constant presence is not gonna happen.

I agree in respect of the driving too. I'm also in the UK and driving is not allowed for at least 3 to 8 weeks (6 is usually recommended) post abdominal surgery because you need to be able to not hesitate if you have to do an emergency stop. If you do drive before your Dr has given you the all clear to do so then your insurance is invalid.

In my experience, they keep you for a night with even a laproscopic hysto. And they won't let you drive home the next day, due to a mix of lingering anesthesia and just general pain.

So I'll bet they'll want her to leave tomorrow. She'll cry about pain. Maybe just maybe, she'll get an extra day if she's histrionic enough. Then she'll be booted.

How is she getting home? A lot of places won't let you even take an Uber home, it has to be someone you know. Joh doesn't have a license iirc.

It's clear the only part of this plan she thought through was the colouring books and big purple nightgown. She's not staying for 6+ days bending the frame on a hospital bed that could go to dozens of other patients that need it more, and there's certainly no way in hell they're going to let Josh spend the entire time there either. The US is not very homogeneous in most things. Having a spouse stay overnight is going to vary hard by individual hospital. Some hospitals have shared rooms and some are newer construction with all single rooms, and some of those single rooms are pretty much designed to have a support person sleep over, with a pull-out chair or a long couch.

Universally, a visitor who's unobtrusive and helpful to the patient is likely to get rules bent for them. A visitor who likes to flip out and yell at perceived authority figures is less likely to receive a sympathy turkey sandwich, and may get 86'd by Security if it's bad enough.

Polissa plans to have Josh stay with her, and she thinks it'll be for a long haul. Weird that she didn't beg for food before this; he should have his cooler packed already! She's hoping to order outside food "for Josh."

Agree, if she's getting a lap hyst, it's probably an outpatient procedure. At my hospital's outpatient dept. we even send the class 3 hamplanets home same day for most cases (which I don't agree with for various reasons/happenings but that's getting into major PL territory).

I do think it could go either way about her staying overnight. If she wasn't humming and plugging her ears during pre-anesthesia testing, Polissa would know if she were planned outpatient... wouldn't she?

There are some cases that are planned to fail discharge for coverage reasons. The surgeon has to pretend the patient will discharge home same day, write orders like it's outpatient, and then say "welp OK they're not safe, keep the SCDs on and place in Observation." There are also patients, usually women of a certain age, who know the doctor told them day surgery, but they packed their rolling suitcase and they are going to be admitted, thank you very much. If they don't make headway with dizziness and they're too hungry to claim nausea, they refuse to cooperate with a road test long enough that they get changed to an admit.

I think Polissa could easily change outpatient to an overnight stay with enough whining, but if anyone told her "six days," it was while they were discussing a worst case scenario. Little did they know that Polissa was putting little hearts on her calendar.

Like I said earlier, it's easy enough to lie to PAT; of course I have a ride home. They won't let her drive 24 hours after the OR--the hospital here gets to call the cops if patients try--but if she drives herself and Josh home the next day, they'll just be charting heavily that they told her not to and educated on the risks due to her procedure. Of course, Josh could just drive them home illegally; absolutely nobody in the hospital is going to card him. Polissa is going to be taken completely by surprise that she's told not to drive, though; why, by concealing this little-known restriction the surgeon basically forced Josh into committing more moving violations!

Just a word on Joh's job: He could have told them that he needed that time off when he was hired. Most employers are willing to accommodate events that were planned before gaining employment, even a vacation usually, as long as you are up front about it.

Same. Less than a week though. And I certainly wasn't coloring, I was watching TV while doped up on gravol as the pain from complications/anesthesia kept me awake. Never watched so many episodes of csi in my life as it was one of the only channels that came in clear.


There's a chance she could use the fact that her bf doesn't have a license to keep herself an extra night as they shouldn't let her drive alone. But that's not going to fly after day 2. By then, she should be ok enough to get herself around. If she's not, they'll certainly pressure her to find a family member. I mean if they're willing to give her a crack shack, there must be someone who can transport her home.


I really wonder why she thinks 6 days is the min she'll stay. There's absolutely no resources online that'll suggest that and if she ever said it to a hysto support group, they'd laugh at her. So unless she has some weird expected complication (doubtful), she's either playing it up to fool people who know nothing about the surgery OR she's pre planning her "omg it went wrong" grift.

Complications aren't common so you and I are anomalies, so much so that it's wild if she just assumes something will fuck up so bad that she'll need inpatient treatment


And why does Josh need to be there to take care of her? She's in a hospital. The one place you literally go to so you can have around the clock care. What help is he going to provide that he needs to be there 24/7?


Granted when I had my complications, it was during covid so hospital rules were different. Overnight patients weren't allowed. But despite living hours away from the hospital and having my inpatient stay unexpected, I told him to gtfo and go chill at home until I called because what the fuck is he gonna do?

I'm from a country of universal Healthcare so I was automatically provided a private single person room but there was nowhere for someone to stay. There wasn't a couch, or a chair to sleep in. There was a bed and a tiny TV attached to a pole that you could move in front of your bed like an IV pole if you paid for it.

Where the fuck is he sleeping? Does medicaid really pay for a big enough room for overnight guests for fairly innocuous procedures like a hysto?
