A Portland-area activist known as Dante Speaks uses the arts to draw attention to the experiences of Black people. Their journey is a story of feeling unseen to eventually being comfortable on the front lines of the Black Lives Matter movement.


“It is definitely my mission to be seen, to be heard, in a world where Black people haven’t been heard for so long,” said Speaks.

WMTW followed Speaks as they were being photographed by a friend in Westbrook.

Speaks, whose given name is Dontavis Hines, moved to Maine from North Carolina as a missionary with a Church nearly a decade ago.

The 28-year-old is no longer preaching gospel but is promoting a different message - Black Lives Matter.

“It is kind of the same idea, just not really about Jesus and the Bible. Just more about humanity and Black liberation,” said Speaks.
