I once knew someone who started lactating after being prescribed fluoxetine (Prozac) and thought it was just one of those annoying side effects people on SSRIs have to deal with. At a follow up appointment, her psychiatrist asked how she was feeling, and she responded, "Oh, I'm feeling SO much better! The lactation thing is a little inconvenient, but you know, I just deal with it." The doctor was like,
(record scratch) "I'm sorry, the
WHAT is inconvenient?!"
Apparently, galactorrhea is a very rare side effect of fluoxetine. Here's the NIH
LactMed database entry about it.
Evidently opioid use has also been reported to
cause lactation in some patients, which is an interesting side note considering our subjects of discussion.
