I definitely do agree that this war was more costly than the Russians expected. The strategy is all wrong for the kind of fighting we saw. Sending columns down the road into enemy territory makes no sense if the enemy is dug in and ready to fight, and it has been costly. Had the west been running this war they would have spent considerable more resources on artillery and air power to soften up the enemy positions before sending in the army

Had the west been running this war they would have spent considerable more resources on artillery and air power to soften up the enemy positions before sending in the army

Russia has the capability to drop a lot more long range fire than they have and it is what people were expecting. Maybe they thought they could do a quick decapitation strike on Kiev and it hasn't worked out. They might pause the land campaign and blast the ukranians for a while before returning to mobile operations.
