I genuinely don't understand why Russia is doing this. What do they have to gain? What does Ukraine have that they want? Putin seems like too smart of a guy to just shell a country because he can. What's the real motivation for all this?

My conspiracy brain says its an US-condoned action to denazify ukraine. Ukraine has been the hotspot for international nazism in the last decade in the same sense that Afghanistan was the jihad hotspot in the 80ies. Political pressure lead to nothing because ukraine is corrupt as fuck and the powers that be decided that they'd rather have a short, quick war but ended the growing nazi presence in Ukraine.
