Pretty much. Not much of an ancient history sperg myself, but my impression is that generally, it’s not that these men became women, but they were still less than men. Hence third gender.

It's usually a matter of gender roles being very strict. So if you're born a man but you can't/won't do "man" things, you get tossed into the "not-man" bucket. But many of these societies also recognized you were also not born a woman, so you couldn't go into the "woman" bucket either. So they made a third bucket for these people to go into while still having some level of usefulness for their society. Even if it was simply as a glorified unpaid whore. The women had to be careful who they had sex with since birth control methods weren't anywhere near as reliable back then as they are now. The not-men, though? No risk of pregnancy, have at it.

Mind you, a lot of places exiled or just killed those men outright. But these activists don't mention those ancient societies because they don't fit their narrative. Gender roles were always strict through the ages. It's much more a "this dude isn't quite a man" in cultures with strong gender binaries. It is a byproduct of strong and rigid gender roles, not a refutation of them. Cultures lacking strong gender binaries lacked the third categories. In some cases, a spiritual role was one option available to these third gender categories, but that was by no means the case in all cultures with such a category.

E: Perhaps as important to note, these third gender categories (almost always male only, thought a few had female ones) were always related to sexuality and gender expression together. I, who am a bit of a history sperg, can't think of any examples of "lesbian" 3rd gender men. The combination of a fetishistic focus on female anatomy and gender expression, with a sexual interest in women, is not what these categories were dealing with. Assuming people like Elagabalus weren't homosexual troons (hard to tell), it's very likely that AGP troonism is at least partially a product of modernity in the same way other culture bound syndromes like anorexia and muscle dysmorphia are.

I have thought the "smokescreen" is a thing for a while, too. The longer people believe trans is some extension of gay, the longer they can enjoy some privileges when getting near women.
