Waaaay back when I was a bagger for a grocery store, I used to say Sir or Ma'am/Miss to my customers, until an old bag got her feathers ruffled because I called her Miss instead of Ma'am (up until that point all the elderly ladies were flattered by it!), so from that point on I stopped using pronouns when I addressed customers.
