I think its pretty common-- and most of the time you don't even realise.
I face planted on ice when I was young... had and extremely bad black eye from it-- much worse than this bitch. Swelling much much worse the day after.
I had a CT scan years later and was asked if I had ever been beaten badly before-- I had broken my lower orbital/ cheek bone at some point.
That's the only event where it could have happened.

Yeah exactly, you have to be a total and utter fat piece of garbage to get turned into a pulp like Ralph, in an urban area that is honestly no safer or more dangerous than any other urban cities.
The downtown area of the city I live in isn't exactly safe. Drunken street brawls are common, our nanny state makes even a pointy stick illegal. I dropped my wallet and a beggar, a BEGGAR returned it. Gave him all my change which was like $12. Lisbon is just like any other big city. It's not safer or more dangerous than LA, Melbourne, Shanghai or Tokyo. Ralph somehow gets beaten up during his second ever trip outside of America.
These "safety index" statistics are meaningless trash. It's ranked by the entire country and made by graduates in journalism. Montpelier in Vermont is definitely safer than Lisbon will ever be despite America ranking the same as some hellhole ridden with cartels and despite Lisbon being about as safe as Melbourne which is also considered safe, when it's not -- when you do something utterly stupid that warrants a good beating.
tl;dr act like a retard in any decently sized city, get your ass beat.

That ranking is a bunch of horseshit, it's clearly ideologically motivated. They put the US at a lower rank than fucking Niger and Honduras. And of course the rank drops off a cliff after 2016, I wonder what happened that year that might cause some globalist economic think tank to do that?Was curious at the overall violence in Portugal, and my 1 minute of extensive research revealed, to my surprise, Portugal ranks #4 on the "Global Peace Index". Ralph definitely provoked this attack somehow, either by getting involved or seeking out illicit activities, maybe gambling, whores, drugs, or running his mouth in english thinking they couldn't understand him....

The thing with government statistics is that they're typically self reported. Want lower crime? Change crime definitions and lose a few reports into the bin.
Also, cities of any size almost always have higher crime than the countryside. I'm not a geography scientist, but my feel of Portugal is it's more rural than some of its neighbors.

Ralph's life has been drastically altered by this beating. He's going to have ongoing medical issues, it's going to have an impact on his brain, and he's definitely going to have PTSD. I wouldn't be surprised if he seems like a completely different person. I smashed my head into a windshield in a car accident once and despite no permanent damage I felt this sort of dream-like dislocation for a whole year after. I know he's probably just dazed, and it's too early to tell, but I just get a sense that all of his false confidence has been ripped away from him and he's completely lost. I can't wrap my head around suffering a nearly fatal beating in a foreign country with no access to finances, no friends except a pedo sociopath fiance, and an autistic simp who's probably on his way out the door. Nevermind the fact that tens of thousands of people are watching it unfold with amusement and (justifiably) smug satisfaction. Fucking wide-awake nightmare. I'd have a panic attack every 10 minutes and probably consider anheroing.
This is probably why Meigh and the few other people who still liked Ralph have gone silent or are openly mocking him. They know his entire persona has evaporated overnight. I think Meigh really bought into his shit, and she has to be undergoing a serious gut-check right now, no pun intended.
It's crazy how one night of retardation can permanently alter your entire life. Ralph definitely has been putting in work for this result for years, but it does happen randomly. Definitely take this as a reminder that fucking with the wrong one, poor impulse control, waddling around like a tard with no regard for your surroundings, can all render you a vegetable in less than 5 minutes.
