Speaking as one, most of us grew up, cut our hair, and got on with our lives, same as the punks and hippies before us.
I think what changed is superficial identities became the lynchpin of people's entire lives, so whereas goths could be goth but still hang around with different types of people and do normal shit --if you don't have at least one photo of you in the full gear at a family dinner surrounded by confused elderly relatives were you even a goth??-- the modern genderspecials need everyone and everything to conform to their head-canon or they flip the fuck out.

yeah the causal relationship is mainly troon to goth, not goth to troon. old goths are fine.
agps are always in subcultures as a means to an end, not because they simply enjoy them.
they want to be or fuck the hot chick, and want to distance themselves from "normalcy".
most troons had no interest in subcultures before they trooned out and were just nerds.
it's part of their "transformation" to a new person, with perceived benefits, to gooth out.
imagine knowing so little about goth history that you're proud to be a garden variety poser.

What fascinates me is the amount of troons that aspire to be the goth gf and get into wiccan/witchcraft. I even know of a troon that calls himself something like "vampire princess lesbian goth muppet". The wiccan angle makes sense as witchcraft is explicitly reserved for women and the use it as a validation tool, but goth is old news and they're only into it because wicca is in fashion. You can see this every year as soon as the clock hits midnight on October 1st as Halloween is coming up and these perverts are sluts for the Halloween aesthetic. They want to be as shocking as possible but want normies to accept and fuck them. Respectability politics be damned.
There may be something to be said about how much they simp for Halloween and the fact that Halloween is a children's holiday. And they don't do the same for holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah when those are more consumerist than Halloween. Possibly the winter holidays are Abrahamic religions and theyre still in their teen rebellion phase and they can dress up for Halloween. Something something the avoidance of adulthood and responsibility.

This tracks with my experience of troons. It's not enough to go from "boy" to "girl", the high wears off, so now you have to go from "girl" to "goth girl", then "goth girl with big boobs" then "non-binary goth girl with big boobs who is a plural system and a disabled queer furry communist", and on and on.
It's why their identities never really seem to stabilize and why they need a new costume and new pronouns every couple of months.
You can see this behavior in the Digibro thread, where Digi, having already gone through the highs and lows of "coming out" as "Beatrice", now has to create new personas and styles to transition into to get a new high (the last one was "blue summer").
For Ja Du, born Adam Wheeler, it wasn't enough to be a woman, he had to be a Fillipina woman with pink hair and disabilities who loves Jordan Peterson.
The FLGS troon I've power-leveled about before ITT was similar. He went from "male nerd" to "transwoman" to "goth" to "stoner goth" to "stoner goth polyamorous lesbian who is into magical girls and fancies himself an artist". He was in his late 20s when this all started (lmao) and it took around 4 years. He has comissioned artwork of what he refers to as his "witchsona", which is of course a purple-haired anime child. Since wicca is a religion, can you imagine a Jewsona lol? "This is Akbar my Muslimsona".
He was taking burlesque lessons before Covid mercifully put a stop to that, so who know where this crazy train ends.
