Looking at the NJ and VA gov elections has been weird.
For NJ, Phil Murphy is cutting ads saying out loud that they "want to be the California of the east US" something only 30% of Jersyians agree with and saying ads where "we are not doing tax reform, we are not your state if you want low taxes". Also, the polls are showing it within 5%.

Virginia is coming from a controversial Democratic governor to McAllife being a terrible campaigner and debater, while Youngkin is consolidating his base while sweeping up in the blue north of the state. The state has trended 4% more Republican since the 2020 election. Also within 5% right now.
Both are litmus tests for how shitty Democrat candidates can run without losing in each or their fortification methods.
