I think the rrat for that that's been repeated a few times is that they probably approached Anycolor with the prospect of buying them and the talents out. Anycolor refused the deal for whatever reasons and Sony Music Japan decided they'd make Nijisanji but obviously better and with half as many vtubers as they currently have at Nijisanji JP.

They're still stakeholders in Anycolor after investing ¥2B into them in May 2020, so it's clear they want their hands in as many pies as possible rather than sever the Niji vein in hopes their project will succeed.

Sony deadline is September 30, 2021 by the way, so we will be hearing more about it in the coming weeks.
