He was raised Mormon and early religious indoctrination is hard to shake off. I'm not surprised that he still thinks alcohol is one of the worst...

To him, there's no contradiction, because he feels he was owed a wife for being a good Mormon boy and God didn't uphold his end of the bargain...

I don't think he is religious because as soon as Mormons say what he wants is against their teachings he is out. But at the same time he can't...
