Attack continues for as long as it takes for you to install mitigation, or for whoever's doing it to get bored/run out of money/get v&. Long term...

It's okay for a day or two but if it's prolonged it can wear out the mainframe.

unless you fucked up cooling so your system busts due to the sustained load there is no damage. The attack only works as long as it runs/gets paid...
