What if that was the plan all along to be able to convert it into Tatooine in case it bombed? Given the clear resemblance it has to Tatooine already.

Look at the original version of the Sarlaac Pit in ROTJ, not the one with the beak head thing. It looks like a blown out vagina in the sand...
