Dude, this isn't some vagary of the free market, the industry is well aware that dead and degraded batteries are a major driver of new sales...

That has little to do with demand; it's almost entirely down to automatics now getting better fuel economy and that few mpg makes it a lot easier...

In America maybe. Very common to not want an automatic in Europe.
