I am 90% certain Kai became popular because he was a super-cool-and-mysterious-tough-but-sensitive-guy in Beyblade. FTMs are very simple creatures.

You'd think there'd be more of them plundering Finnish names like Aki or Riku, but I guess those are too similar to actual Japanese names.
