Everyone who served in a branch of the military is a veteran, whether they served during war or peace. That said, Onion is likely not eligible...

Veteran or not (he's not), it's Memorial Day. The dude's not dead, so people shouldn't be thanking him anyway. Veteran's Day isn't 'til November.
