I never actually heard of it at all until I started uni, for whatever reason professors love these Ted Talks to a poing they gave us assignments...

I'm sure there's good ones out there. But yeah it turned into a real circlejerk of we are so smart and you are so smart for watching us, now...

TED Talks were popular in the beginning because the company that organized them were VERY VERY VERY picking on who they let speak at their events...
