Better comparison would be the P-36 as mainline so they are at least from the same branch but still a good point.

The Buffalo was built for the Navy. So it could fit on an aircraft carrier and be beefy and do other Navy things, it wasn't the US mainline...

At the expense of taking this too seriously, the Buffalo was on its way out by the time of Pearl Harbor, and the war kept them in service well...
