The cruelty of reality is an eye-opener for some.

It's end of empire shit. Something along the lines of "Civilization is built in iron boots and collapses in silk slippers."

This mentality of peace being the default has always astounded me. Look at any history book and it'll show that our level of relative "peace" is...
