Does anyone actually think Shaner has contacted any sort of legal help at all? I think he's just saying that so we'll stop mocking a known pedophile.

Counsel of record for that case appears to be one Benjamin Mayerson.
Oh, incidentally, Mayerson is mentioned and discussed in a book called Unsettled.

He's also, seemingly, defending someone who hacked his account, and/or committed identity theft against him, which has to be a conflict of interest. That, or the alternative is that he posted messages on facebook threatening actions against people. Either way, neither of those circumstances paint him in a very good light, if true of course.

Personally, I think it would be a good policy not to refer to any lolcow as a "confirmed pedophile" unless that person has a bonafide conviction in a court of law and is a Registered Sex Offender.

I think I posted a link to a local report about that case a few pages back, but this part of that article stood out to me:
EDIT: Crikey, AnOminous AND Boldspicy mentioned it, it sounds like Hy's son was the lead lawyer. A question for the legal Kiwis, is taking on a case that long without payment normal? Sounded weird to me but I have no idea.

Yes, we have the docs and witness testimony proving that Hy was, in fact, crazy enough to argue on Len's behalf.
I suppose that we're still shocked that someone who fucking became a lawyer is willing to literally say half of this shit in a court of law, but autism apparently knows all types. That or Len is the broodmother for an alien parasite that sucks the brains out of people, and Hy and Kaufman are merely the start of an autistic invasion of Pennsylvania.
... The sad thing is that if you told me that the latter was a possibility, I might consider it more plausible than half the shit we've heard Len and his friends get up to.

Oh yes, in Canada for sure. I have been involved on files many years ago where the case took 10 years to settle. Its usually contingency fee based for the plaintiff lawyer. I worked Defence so we were paid by the insurance company.
We don't have punitive awards up here at all. Its more the cost of future care and future loss of income are the big heads of damages. General Damages are capped at about 300K per SCC. When the future heads are involved, the case can easily go on for a decade, if liability is in question, add another 2 to 5. But those are real high end. It depends on the loss, the damages, the experts required, liability factors etc etc. as to ultimate length.
