The cops went to the bathroom to confront the kid after his girlfriend's mom reported him for domestic violence. He had allegedly gotten into a physical fight with his girlfriend the day before. The mom regrets calling the cops at all.

No one knew he had a gun, but he was keeping it in his pocket with his hand on it. The way the police described it was that the gun "went off" during a "struggle," which prompted them all to think they were being attacked. One of the other officers that got wounded was also shot by friendly fire. This revelation is what made people mad initially because it made them think the kid had never shot a gun or had a gun. But when they said there would be no charges, a judge also made them release the video, which is the first time they revealed it was a black cop who had shot the kid and the officer.
It was originally reported as a school shooter scenario. The stories also bring up that three other kids have been shot and killed in OUT-OF-SCHOOL shootings this year, so I guess the neighborhood is bad even though it's a magnet school.
They are still protesting, it looks like. This one? I mean, I see why it might look like it wasn't justified, but I don't know what you expect when a gun goes off right beside you in a gun-free zone. It's not as clear-cut as the Columbus stabbing, but it just seems like an understandable but sad situation that could have been avoided if he'd left his gun at home.
