It has a huge following amongst left-leaning types, many of whom think of themselves as artists (Or fantasize about it at least.) Because of it's focus on art rather than commodity, many of these supposed artists sign up knowing that they won't have to actually provide any services.

No one knows, but it's pretty obvious by looking at it's success stories that the money is flowing to people who already have money and are just utilizing Patreon as another cash flow, like what has happened with Kickstarter (See: Amanda Palmer, Jim Sterling, etc.)

Patreon takes 5% of all transactions + another 5% if it's a paypal transaction and another 1-2% if a credit card is involved, so it's not even the same twenty dollars going around, people keep feeding into it.

I actually assisted in writing a guide to gaming Patreon awhile back and there is an entire chapter in it devoted to figuring out ways to make it seem like you're putting money back into the circlejerk without actually doing it. Appearing to be dumb enough to give up some of your funds in order to fund other people funding other people who fund other people is a big part of marketing on Patreon.

Here's everything I currently know about Kylie Brooks situation:

• He is deaf and unable to speak, and communicates with ASL
• He is confined to a wheelchair due to cerebral palsy
• He identifies as transgender but his palsy keeps him unable to shave / take care of himself
• He lives alone on ~$800 and requires assistance when traveling out of the home
• He has attempted college a couple times, generally revolving around programming or IT
• He's gotten a bit of play because Facebook briefly banned him for their real name policy

The video I've attached to this post gives a decent view of how Kylie is able to function, which is to say not well. At this point, I'm accepting that he probably is transgendered and can't take care of his appearance. If my hands shook like that, or I didn't have full control of my muscle movements, I probably wouldn't shave my own face or try to apply makeup.

Now, with that said, here's other things we know about Kylie:

• He's an unrepentant racist who hates all white people
• The entire world should give him millions simply for existing
• He's an "activist" who demands events make sweeping concessions for him, and then calls them out even if they're tiny or they don't have the money to support a single disabled guy's requirements
• He absolutely refuses to pay the $137 to legally change his name to Kylie which would fix many issues
• Instead of doing any work (such as writing a blog about his experiences to build his "brand"), he yells into an echo chamber on Facebook about white people and the evils of Canada
• Literally EVERYTHING is the fault of white cis people

In conclusion, any guilt I may have over misgendering someone with a debilitating illness is easily suppressed by his being a totally shitty person.
