If Trump died all the votes for him already cast don't get thrown out. It's the same as if a president-elect dies in between the election and inauguration, the vice president-elect becomes the president-elect. Pence becomes the presidential nominee on the ticket and votes for the Trump/Pence ticket already cast still count.

I am not disagreeing with that. I am just thinking about turn out. In lots of the key battleground states every vote is needed.
So your options are keep it Trump/Pence and hope people will understand that they could still vote for him and are enthusiastic about Pence.
Or try and change the ticket and throw away all those mailed in ballets plus the ones of states who refuse to change their ballets this late.

Nah, the ticket is still Trump/Pence. Constitutionally, I believe we can still elect a dead president and then the machinery ticks in later to trigger the succession. It would be a constitutional crisis, though - good thing he got the nom on ACB

The Constitution and the US Code don't say much about Presidential elections. The states have to have an election on a certain day, they can't deny people certain people the right to vote, and their electors have to meet on a certain day and vote for President and Vice President.

The states decide how their electors are appointed and who (if anyone) they're required to vote for. Some states require their electors to vote for the Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates who won the popular vote in their state, some require them to vote for the candidates of the party that won the popular vote, some have exceptions for deaths while others don't, and some simply require the electors to show up and vote.

If the Republican vote were split between a dead candidate and a live one there might be no majority. The House would have choose the President. But instead of 435 votes, each state would get one vote, and I have no idea how that would turn out. But I imagine there would be lots of screaming from the coasts when they realize a House election actually gives the populous states even less importance than they had in the electoral college.
