Birdshot's good if some asshole is 5ft away from you in your house and don't wanna overpenetrate through the walls and hit someone who isn't criminal filth. Anything beyond that, you go for either buckshot or a slug, I wouldn't trust it to put anything down in one shot at a distance.

I like Paul, but there is no reason to choose a shotgun over a carbine for home defense imo. You get more rounds and faster follow up shots for self defense with a carbine. The argument is always for birdshot due to over penetration and even he says that it birdshot sucks unless you're using a hot load. I am also not convinced by the hotdog and steak ballistic target he uses in the birdshot video either. If you look at the premier units who shoot people indoors for a living around the world, you don't see them rolling shotties.
