I don't understand why they couldn't just take a break from each other for a few months and, if they both still felt that their relationship was worth fighting for, attempt to salvage things at a later date. So this was inevitable, and everyone saw it coming. Not that we're privy to the behind the scenes of the relationship but the obvious signs of something being wrong were... well obvious. Getting indefinitely engaged, neither one moving to be with the other (They live in neighboring countries that speak the same language and share virtually the same culture and history. It's not like either of them lived on another continent with huge culture and language barriers.)

It sucks I'm sure, and most people who have endured a dying relationship can confirm that it's hard to bear, but many of those same people will also say that they learned a lot about romanticizing people and relationships to the point where they ignore obvious red flags, and go on to make better choices.

Greg probably knew for years - it would be on him to try and drive the relationship forward. They got engaged in 2017 (despite not living together, lmao) and from there he's made virtually no effort to actually move things forward.

They probably only got engaged out of fear - as I believe they were dating for 3 years at that point and shoe was probably dropping hints about what she wanted. It was likely a way for him to stall for time and keep the relationship going even as he got bored of it. He seems extremely commitment-adverse and this makes sense in that context.
