I do know that in instances such as these where one group is clearly larger than the other, police will arrest the smaller group to deescalate and will release them later. Arrest doesn't mean charged, booked, and thrown in the fish tank. But we are in clown world now and if these guys get arrested, and charged for doing the job the fucking city should be doing, which is protecting city property, which tax payers pay for (not to mention their salaries), well ... As a former Portland resident, let me explain it very simply:
Oregon is adjacent to California, has mild weather, and various niceties like no sales tax. It is relatively cheap to live in an apartment there. Add in the various very liberal universities like PSU; and it's a haven for dropouts, California expats, and the homeless.

On that last point: homelessness has always been a problem, but until a few years ago it was what you might call manageable. Homeless would yell at people as they passed, cops would tell people with tents to move on, that was that. What changed? Occupy Wall Street. Several nice parks in the downtown got taken over by "protesters" and the Mayor/police completely cucked. The parks were eventually cleared - leaving utter ruins and mud mixed with stool behind, so bad the parks required hazmat for several months - but various tent cities sprang up on the city's ourskirts. Fucking Hooverville style tent cities. So now, whenever they need protesters, they have not just university students but entire camps of the mentally ill and anarchic as well.

Really I'm surprised Portland doesn't have a CHAZ right now.

Are there any sane portions of the city that could produce some backlash over this?

There's basically nothing downtown except for the dying port (which regulations eat away at, to free up land for high rises), the PSU university, OHSU (a hospital stupidly built on a fucking hill overlooking the city, which is about as acessable as the top of a ski slope so they built an equally retarded aerial tram as a tourist non-attraction), the basketball stadium, a few banks, and law firms. It's a microcosm for the entire state. It produces nothing because it isn't allowed to, and anyone who wants to produce something leaves. Do you know what Oregon's top employers' are? Intel, Nike, and the education system. Two corporate HQ's and fucking schools. That is Oregon.

There used to be a time where it was a major agriculture, timber, and ore producer; but regulation has or is killing all that. No economic activity is allowed outside the Portland metropolitan area, and there's not much within either. No wonder half the population are hobos. Nobody could find a job if they wanted one, which is why I left.

A very late followup, since I don't recall seeing this posted. Two weeks ago at the start of the riots, there was a video posted of a guy who disarmed an antifa rioter by taking a looted AR-15 away from him. Looks like there was an interview with the guy who took the rifle and cleared it a few days after.

As we speculated, he's ex-Marine, and he was there on security detail for a news crew. But it turns out that was the second rifle he recovered from Antifa. The rifle you see around his neck was recovered a few minutes earlier, from another Antifa member looting a different cop car. The first guy had actually fired it a couple of times before this badass jumped him with a Glock.

It's a great story and he tells it very well, worth listening for at least the first 15 minutes the whole thing is great.
