Yup. Every game's updated at least once or twice for "bug fixes", only to never get updated ever again and essentially abandoned. For example, Gacha Life still has a christmas-theme in June.
Not to mention the self-inserts, heavily clashing artstyles, and the GRADIENTS.

If I were born a decade later, I would have loved Gacha Life. Creating OCs with that kind of tone and aesthetic was one of my first exposures to the internet when I was younger. And it became all the more enjoyable because nobody I knew talked about it. The adults whom I'd came to accept as all-knowing sages had no idea what I was talking about. Those web communities were my first glimpse of what I perceived as an exotic culture. Most of all, participating in them felt as though I was a member of some secret club.

Children are naturally precocious. They're drawn to what their parents say they shouldn't, because they feel more mature for enjoying this content as it sets them apart from what their parents usually expect of them. Then when they begin to feel like they're part of that aforementioned secret club, egos will inevitably start to swell in their little Lord of the Flies-esque community.

I think the reason Harry Potter and the YA fiction that came in its wake became popular was because it drew upon the prepubescent desire to belong to a 'secret club' beyond the adult world. Now that its popularity has waned, weeaboo web communities like Gacha Life fill the niche. And when it's presented to them in a manner saccharine enough to be familiar combined with enough disturbing shit to be transgressive (in this case being too inappropriate for a primary school environment), its success is guaranteed.

On another note, I've noticed that this shit is disturbingly popular among primary schoolers. My sister tells me that almost every girl in her class watches Gacha Life videos. Their introduction to those parts of internet culture is like a sick, twisted and cynical version of the wonder I felt back in the early 2010s on Youtube, Scratch and Deviantart.

Also, to reply to @DungeonMaster's post, yeah I remember the early 2010s internet culture as well. Much more innocent and such, but for me it was YouTube, and Club Penguin and eventually 2011 roblox. Now that I'm 20 and look back at the Late 2000s and Early 2010s, it was a much better time for everyone. No screeching SJWs, no race baiting cunts, no spergy wignats, and no discord trannies. Sure you had the occasional group and community of retards back then.

I wish the kids of today could see the internet past that we experienced. It was more tame and innocent to say the least. I can relate to what DungeonMaster is saying, and kids of the future will have the same experience with their own communities and get nostalgic. Sure you'll probably end up doing some dumb shit that you'll regret a year or two later, but it was fun at the time. I've noticed how these web communities are now way less innocent than they used to be. It really gives me deep concerns for future generations.

Honestly, a lot of the Gacha Life stuff reminds me a lot of the late 2000s/early 2010s era of MapleStory animations and all that. I think it's fair, people use these dolls/sprites because they like the style of them, plus they have that sense of polish/completion to them since they're from existing games, anyway.

So as I mentioned in the OP, there is drama and slap fights all over the community. The apparent suicide of sweet lemon was a recent even that happened around the same time as I posted the OP and is currently the most talked about event right now. To catch anyone up to speed, Lemon had someone named "Emily" who would steal her artwork, characters among other things and would apparently harass Lemon. This apparently lead Lemon to suicide. r/gachalifecringe went into lockdown and banned all talk about lemon and thus r/sweetlemons was created to commemorate her death.

I'll not bother posting any of the fan artwork, but only some of the interesting posts that happened on their subreddit as there was no banned topics unless it wasn't related to Lemon.

A moderator of r/sweetlemons posted a sticky mesage giving a rundown of the situation leading to her suicide with screenshots. The screenshots show that Emily appears to be harassing Lemon and when the OP of this post reached out to Emily, it appears Emily was saying it wasn't her and that lemon was the one bullying her.

I will admit I don’t remember there being any private channels when I was in the server - however, I distinctly remember being given admin privileges because I fucking nuked the server before I left.
