I hate these dull little slice of life comics the Twitter crowd continually produces. They're safe but vulgar, emotional but unengaging, deeply personal but kinda pointless. It's not limited to these Indie comics either, you see it from big name comics too whenever they hire from the woke crowd. It's like a hand-wringing, foul-mouthed Family Circus.

That said, I genuinely like Jess's art and there really isn't any simmering hatred in this comic. Once again, Jess is one of the best of her tribe, despite the inherent flaws of the niche she's crawled into.

Consider this particular comic episode to be a character-establishing one, a test drive. Let's see if Jess turns out something more substantive in entries to come.

It's weird she usually draws her self-insert with droopy eyelids, but always take selfies with that manic wide-eyed sanpaku look. It doesn't look cute or cartoony or whatever she's trying to pull, it just looks like she's a serial killer.

That said, her non-bullshit comics are cute. I think her style lends itself really well to funny-animal-comic work. If she can keep her politics out of it she could do a newspaper strip.

this sums up my feelings as well. Also brings to mind the only reason I'd skim Family Circus was to hopefully find another single panel landscape of Billy doing that meandering, dotted-line path over everything and anything on his way to do one simple task.

I dunno, I think some people go a little too easy on Jess’ art. Her slice of life comics are pretty milquetoast and harmless, but her overall style is hardly one I’d call “cute” in any capacity.

If anything Jess’ art has always struck me as incredibly lazy and slap-dashed. It’s like all the worst elements of the CalArts.gif meme and webcomic cliches with an extra helping of Rugrats on the side that’s been hastily put together on the iPad equivalent of MS Paint at the eleventh hour.

In terms of bland slice of life comics, there plenty out there with way more visual appeal.

Her art was cuter before she started ripping off Shmorky.

Ive said the same thing earlier in this thread. It really is ugly but I guess farmers have been so desensitized with bad art that this looks cute in comparison

Perhaps I am just being nitpicky here, but as cute as I find these "new characters," I think they look like a hipsterized recolor of Big Bird and a rip of Hello Kitty's nemesis Catnip. 702607 702606
edit: sorry I don't know how attach files in a not shit way.

If Jess would game less and lay off the weed, this wouldn't happen. I do get the feeling that Jess is implying that it's somehow wrong or unfair that work gives her a sense of accomplishment.
Considering a page or two back Jess made some comments that make it sound like she's aware of this thread and possibly reads it, I wouldn't be surprised if this is also directed at all the comments about how she needs to finish her damn comic on a consistent schedule. Kinda like a passive aggressive mother who tells you it's totally fine that you don't want her ash toast and salmonella hazard for breakfast, not like she slaved over a hot stove to make it or anything.

Though lol @ Jess if it seriously takes her 12 hours to churn out one of these comics and isn't just exaggerating for maximum guilt tripping.

Oh he definitely reads it, that's why he won't bring back Bradly.

What drawing techniques are being employed that your hand is BRUISED and SWOLLEN? Are you smacking your hand with a hammer after every image?
Also the first two panels made me hopeful that the plastic hair thing wouldn't reappear but apparently it's still there, just inconsistent.
Great.

To give some context, a lot of artists do have to be careful when working for long periods of time with tablets and brushes. The way you hold your brush not only determines your strokes but the motions you make with your hand. Drawing in itself is an exercise. You make constant movement with your hand and you're gripping a small object for far too long. It's very easily to develop poor posture and carpal tunnel if you do not stretch normally. Which most artist don't do. At most some artists do special stretches.

My guess is Jess is having some pain due to poor posture+ not stretching+ not learning to stop gripping their pen so hard. However I have to wonder about them getting bruised. Cramping is an obvious factor, but bruising? They probably put that in for dramatic effect, but they must have some super grip or something.

It's the bruising and swelling that specifically got me, not the back stuff or some minor cramping. I get that, I've been working as a professional artist for 8 years now, I know that song and dance.
Not trying to be a dick, but I put in my 8-12 hours a day, so I'm not coming from a place of complete ignorance when I say that shit doesn't make sense.

Oh no, I agree with you (am a professional too) it's just very odd how they showed their bruising coming from doing their art. Like. What the hell are they doing? Gripping a pencil too hard? Get some gloves, Jess!
