We can data mine them as see that they have over 40k users, but how many are active is really questionable. Hell they must have banned 5k permanently by now.

People who are banned get removed from the front page stat, ResetEra has closer to 50k issued User IDs.

I figured as much. Their actual user list must be far smaller, and the users that are consistently active is the true litmus test for just how well off they are doing.
If possible, might not hurt to add a "active within x days" tally to your site stats (an average of a month seems like it might be a reasonable start)

Only 5%-15% of a forum's viewership will actively post. Even for imageboards with no registration or barrier to entry, WITH anonymity. The remainder are satisfied to lurk or post one or two messages a month, just to have a specific question answered or some other need fulfilled. It's almost thermodynamic, in that users that post will continue to post, and users that silently observe will continue to lurk.
You're still correct, there's a lot of variance in how comfortable that 5%-15% feel posting. I think most of them are oblivious to their own wrongthink or toxicity if they have any, until whacked with the banhammer & told otherwise.

That's the extra reason why they push for you to verify yourself if you are an industry insider; they don't want to hit you with the same force they do normal members. If Skyrim wasn't already verified when that big thread blew up, he would have been banned for inflammatory statements vilifying devs, whether they believed him or not.
It's silly to think they have the same "pull" as NeoGAF did. First, their Verified list is 132 users, the majority of which are probably journo writers rather than actual game creators. Second, social media & anonymous imageboards exist now, which wasn't competition for NeoGAF at its creation, so devs are able to test the waters with ideas and leak or fake-leak stuff much easier to larger crowds. Twitter is so simple, why would anyone sign up on NeoGAF or ReeEra to get reach fans? Especially when those aren't really fans.
