He didn't try to dodge the state business tax, he just took the word of someone who was filing his (Phil's) taxes in his spare time when he said that Phil totally didn't need a new tax attorney when Phil moved across the country. Because Phil is a fucking idiot.
Nah, Phil quite literally said multiple times that he wanted to go to a state with no state taxes, he did the "research" and thought that was Washington. Then he didn't pay for multiple years while living there and running a business. Sounds like avoiding taxes to me.

There's no point in even streaming those games unless you're a Tier 0 Streamer who will get it early or play it at your own pace and don't rush it, since everyone is likely too busy playing it during the release period. Carving out a niche is way more stable of a strategy- if Phil embraced being a rage happy gamer or sticking to fighting games he'd likely be slightly less fucked today.

Phil never understood what his appeal was. Before he exposed himself as a bitter, greedy manchild, people thought Phil was just a dumb fat guy that liked playing video games and occasionally raged when he struggled. Phil was the rage happy gamer that played all the new games. It's not that difficult to see why Phil was so popular early in his YT career; it also helped there weren't that many people uploading gaming videos so choice was pretty limited. You could find his jokes annoying and his bad gameplay to be irritating to watch, but it was impossible to hate the guy because he didn't talk about himself that much. The less people knew about Phil personally, the more comfortable they were with watching him.
Another problem is that, like you said, Phil never carved out his own niche audience after the Let's Play community expanded exponentially, instead trying to appeal to everybody but not realizing his own limitations. Every good streamer or Let's Player establishes a consistent tone/theme or plays a certain genre of games that keeps an audience watching day after day. People are creatures of habit and when they find something they like, they generally stick with it. Not everybody is going to like you, but that's because people have different tastes. Phil does not understand this basic principle and is genuinely baffled as to why he doesn't have millions of fans like Pewdiepie or Ninja or whoever else he's insanely jealous of. Let's take a look at what you'll get when you watch Phil's streams. His selection in games is completely random most of the time. His "go to" games are ones he openly declares his hatred for. He doesn't play most of the new big releases for illogical reasons. He doesn't even rage genuinely anymore because he obviously plays up his reactions for the completely unnecessary facecam. He complains about his fucking taxes while he's playing. He treats everybody like shit. So what's the appeal of Phil, what's supposed to keep people watching? I don't see anything. Phil is lucky that he was big early because he's still scraping by on his "legacy" alone. If Phil were starting out now, he'd be less popular than Kat was as a streamer because he does everything wrong.

I just finished watching a TIHYDP of Dead by Daylight. And Phil still managed to make my jaw drop. He said, with zero shame in his voice, that he has never seen a generator and doesn't know what one looks like. Then he proceeds to call them motors the rest of the time he is playing.

I...I just...really?

I know this manbaby didn't grow up in the country and never camped before. But Jesus H. Christ, has he never watched a film that inspired that game before? Those things are somewhat of a semi trope.

And I don't think I have ever hit up a Walmart that didn't at least have portable ones in stock.

It will be a shitshow, basically what the new GoW is about, is a new different style from the usual button mashin', no meme'ing but reviewers are going with "It's using Dark Souls style", i hope this is true
I wouldn't put much trust into anyone touting a game as being "Dark Souls Style." Every year since the original came out every game has been "the Dark souls of puzzle games," or "the dark souls of football management sims." I'll be glad when dark souls stops being the measuring stick for all other games. God of War really only needed updating and a new story. A little bit more maturity and to dive deeper into Norse mythology. Phil really won't get it. The relationship between Kratos and his son seems to be like Joel and Ellie. Phil has a hard time acting like he gives a shit about character relationships. I don't think I've ever seen him show evidence of connecting with a character in a game.

The less people knew about Phil personally, the more comfortable they were with watching him.

Phil's 'face reveal' was the same video as the storied "click on the ads that show up on the videos there" video. He became more personable with the intention to drive more "participation". He couldn't survive with people simply watching. His viewers knowing about Phil personally, and his myriad of problems that is essentially his personality, is what he relies on to get at their money, even back in 2009.

Another problem is that, like you said, Phil never carved out his own niche audience after the Let's Play community expanded exponentially, instead trying to appeal to everybody but not realizing his own limitations.

Back when things were still going well for Phil, he did a Christmas vlog speculating on the coming new year. I still remember him telling Leanna about how things would continue going well for his "business" of uploading his gameplay, since there wouldn't be any competition for what he does.

He thought what he did couldn't be duplicated. He was special, and would always be special. The appearance of other "Let's Players" literally never occurred to him. You can see his assurance in how much he sunk into the move to Washington. Those copycat Youtuber's sole purpose for existing was to fuck him, and this drove whatever momentum he had into the ground.

Another part of this is his resentment, feeling that other "Let's Players" stole his wholly original idea. He accused the Kojima World Order of "stealing" a name he came up with, not understanding this was done as a joke. He can't accept the growth of a natural market, something outside himself. So he refuses to adapt (or at least tries every once and a while only to be rebuffed), and takes it personally.

  1. Buys every AAA he's played for the last 9001 years day one (or sooner via pre-orders and/or exploits)
  2. Does not have the self control to go the fuck to bed by 2 AM most nights

imagine being so much of a dullard that you read that and think "wow, what a sincere opinion" and not "why is this person talking to me in the tone of a pandering late-night infomercial"

This is kinda the reason I follow this lolcow. The things he does and the things he says... living in an opposite world.
This all day God of War tweeting has been annoying as hell. It smells of desperation, like the entire month depends on this playthrough being extremely profitable. Between this and Phil finally playing Bloodborne he may have told more truth then lies about those taxes.

This tweet itself is kinda amazing though. Glad to hear God of War is good, but fuck all of you people telling me how good the game is because you got it early and I didn't. I wish I was better then all of you, but i'm not so come watch me play the game. Don't buy the game until you watch me beat it, then watch my awful rambling review 100 times. Oh and if you have $60 for the game my Paypal link is right here...just saying.

You can taste the jealousy in these tweets. He wishes he was a "cherry-picked elite" instead he's probably drunk on gin sitting alone in his house tweeting this shit.

If he wasn't such a cunt to everybody he may have had access to a steady stream of review copies.

But he's too real to make good business decisions.

He tried guise, he really tried to keep it DSPositive. He's on his best behavior just after a suspension, a week or 2 later and he's back to being the same old dick as always.

Or maybe it was a April fools.

This man has the self-control and awareness of a corpse.
he is just so full of dspositivity, he couldnt even contain it till he finished writing that tweet. He just had to call names...

Did Phil really get invited to join TGWTG during the height of their popularity? Phil claims he was ranked #2 on Blip, just behind the Nostalgia Critic, but I just find it hard to believe this. Phil's content had nothing to do with Channel Awesome. I think this is another exaggeration from Phil.

Maybe someone maybe once mentioned what if... but i doubt it. plus he got the booth from blip after a few weeks..

A long time ago, back when Phil was on blip.tv, Phil had indirectly stated in a vlog that he was attempting to join Channel Awesome. It would require some digging on his old youtube channel (darksydephil) to actually find it though.

I do believe he is telling the truth however on the deal falling through because of his blip.tv ban.
