It's the fucking parents that wont let this happen. Poll after poll shows a majority of parents want their kids to have a cell phone, in high school, so they can contact them.
We have a whole generation of parents who have seperation anxiety from their kids.
Here in California, surprisingly, it's the state and local governments pushing the ban on cell phones. First you have it mandated by state law, this year, and even my local school district (headed by a liberal) voted to extend that ban from bell to bell. Not even at lunch.
It was the parents who complained at meetings and didnt support it in polls.
And yet they can call the front office and be put in touch directly to the teacher's classroom phone. But the parents are lazy millennials with anxiety now so that's too many people to interact with when all they want is to text their kid to get a ride from their friend because the parent made a capricious decision to stop at the nail salon after work. Or whatever bullshit.
I have had parents contacting their kids over interpersonal bullshit, family drama, sending a meme, just to chat. It's fucking wild. But if you push back they will escalate. Excuses I've experienced are:
Thats because you want privacy to groom them!
What if there's a school shooting?
It's part of their IEP!
This phone is very expensive, and so is my car and my wife.
This is the modern world and they need to practice using a phone.
Have you tried being more interesting than their phone?
Our lives are very complicated and this is necessary.
It's really the same thing as the proliferation of ebikes. Nobody wants to actually parent, so let the kid take themselves to ballet class (they're giving blowjobs and vaping behind the gas station.) Nobody wants to be associated with the mean parents described in classic movies and TV shows.
Truthfully, I do not care to attempt to change people's values. But I think if parents refuse to sign
and abide by behavior contracts that are based in known, successful policies, then they should be given a list of other schools that make such accommodations. Everyone has an opinion on how education is best done, and everyday people are making the choice to homeschool because they think they know best. Let them, encourage them. If you don't want to homeschool go to some online learning program to save yourself from draconian rules. Please.
Just stop trying to make public education for normies do all this other shit that doesn't work at all.
