“We have a proud slogan, ‘My bloodline ends with me,’” Verena Brunschweiger says. “I think this is a responsible choice.”
As more Australians choose to delay or forgo having children entirely, Elon Musk has branded “disappearing” Aussies an “endangered species” — but according to “childfree icon” Brunschweiger, that’s a good thing.
“He needs as many new work slaves as possible, he likes selling his cool cars to as many consumers as possible, so for him, of course, it’s important to have many new people,” the 46-year-old activist and author tells news.com.au. “And he doesn’t like people who are not white, as everyone knows, so it makes sense to encourage white women to breed.”
Like most developed nations, Australia is grappling with a long-term decline in the birthrate. Australia has been below the replacement rate of 2.1 children per woman for almost 50 years, but that number hit a record low of 1.48 in 2024, according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) published in October.
Mr Musk, who has 14 children, is one of the most prominent voices on the “pro-natalist” side, with the trillionaire warning that plummeting birthrates pose an existential crisis for humanity.
But Brunschweiger, a prominent German feminist who made headlines in Europe with her best-selling 2019 manifesto Kinderfrei Statt Kinderlos (Childfree, Not Childless) says the growing calls for more babies mask a sinister agenda — to “control women, and keep refugees out”.
“Pro-natalism is really in vogue again in Europe, in Australia, around the world basically, and everyone, especially right-wing politicians like Trump, Vance, et cetera, want women to have more and more white babies,” she says. “This is a really dangerous development which I’d really like to fight.”
She rubbishes the suggestion that civilisation will collapse if people stop having children.
“It’s severely ageist,” she says. “I’m 46 … we have 40 or more years ahead of us. We all have a future, and we are already here. There are billions of people already here and nobody cares about them. There are so many orphanages, people living in the streets, addicts, we should help those people. This is a meaningful contribution to make society better and to care for the individual, and not producing new masses without faces. I believe in helping those who already exist.”
Brunschweiger says similar “populist nonsense” is pushed by rising right-wing German party Alternative for Deutschland (AfD).
The anti-immigration party wants more Germans to have babies so “they can say, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, dear refugees, go back and drown or die or starve or whatever, because we have so many of our own people and we have to care for them first”.
“They say we need our own kids because German white kids are better than other kids who immigrate into the country,” she says. “All the white people go, ‘Wouldn’t it be so horrible if we lost the white people, the white majority?’ They always want white women to have more babies to in order to be able to say, ‘Oh, stay the way we are, we are already full.’”
Brunschweiger argues western countries have a “moral duty” to take in refugees and immigrants and stop having children of their own. “Because we produce all the climate change and all those things which make them leave [their] country,” she says.
“They don’t leave because they don’t like it where they were born. Who does that? It’s always a kind of distressed situation if you leave your country and want to go somewhere else. So I would take all immigrants and refugees in because we ruined the world, so to speak. We produce the climate change which makes the life in Africa, for instance, miserable and horrible. So of course, why not invite [them] if they want to come?”
Brunschweiger is explicit that her childfree advocacy is pointed largely at “white” populations, and not immigrants who often have larger families.
“Yeah, of course,” she laughs. “My focus, and that’s what drives the AfD nuts, is we have to cut back our numbers.”
Western governments have widely cited falling birthrates among native populations as driving the need for high levels of immigration in recent decades.
Australia’s Centre for Population notes the decline in the total fertility rate (TFR) has been driven by lower fertility rates among women under 30.
In 1971, the average age of mothers was 25. That has now risen to 32.
“This is part of a broader trend of delaying parenthood, with many people choosing to have children later in life,” the Centre says in its 2025 Population Statement. “However, this delay is not being fully offset by higher fertility rates at older ages. Many women who start families later have fewer children overall, either by choice or by circumstance. As a result, overall fertility rates have declined.”
Brunschweiger’s main argument for having fewer babies is environmental.
“Impact always consists of population, affluence and technology,” she says. “And if we emit like crazy and use resources way more than we have … where would those resources come from? We take it from the global south.”
The other reason is “female empowerment”.
Brunschweiger, a self-described radical feminist, makes the case that going childfree is the best way for women to fight the “patriarchy”.
“This is like in our Third Reich — it’s really similar,” she says. “They want people to go back into the kitchen, women to have no real work … so they are always some kind of slaves of the husbands. They want this traditional role model back for women — having kids, doing everything for your man, doing chores, being in the kitchen, not having your own opinion, not being in politics. This is actually a horrible development. But that’s of course the strategy, because they are misogynistic and don’t believe in equality of the sexes.”
Feminists and progressive environmentalists, she argues, often leave out “one of the most important aspects, which is don’t do the patriarchy such a big favour [by having] five kids”.
“Then you are usefully occupied, in their opinion, and don’t have that much time and resources left to fight patriarchy or do anything useful apart from raising those kids,” she says.
At an individual level, she argues childfree women have a better sex life, avoid pregnancy-related health complications and have a better lifestyle overall.
Western populations should go childfree but in the long run “preferably … everyone” because “the advantages are clear and there are so many things to gain, especially as a woman”.
“So many mothers have problems after having given birth … psychologically, physically, financially,” Brunschweiger says.
Her “philosophical third reason” for trying to persuade people to have fewer children is simply that “it’s really not that amazing a world anymore, especially in some countries”.
“Here in Germany or in Australia, it’s still comparatively fine, but there are countries which are uninhabitable,” she says. “It’s way too hot, people die, they don’t have water, they don’t have air to breathe, they don’t have anything, and it’s really an additional burden on those people. And I always want to help the global south and animals.”
Brunschweiger says she has experienced severe backlash as a result of her activism.
“It’s part of the general backlash you receive if you are in the public eye as a feminist, especially as an advocate for the childfree lifestyle,” she says. “People write to me … using slurs and insults, the usual. It’s the same vitriol for every woman who dares speak up and do anything, apart from having babies [and] smiling submissively.”
Brunschweiger rejects the pro-natalist argument that not having children is selfish. “We have a proud slogan, ‘My bloodline ends with me.’ I think this is a responsible choice,” she says.
“I can say that because I don’t have any brothers or sisters — so my bloodline does end with me. And I think this is a responsible choice, because I don’t put another burden on an already overstrained planet. I don’t do patriarchy a favour.”
She counters that, in fact, “it’s rather selfish to have kids because they are like mini-mes”.
“This is almost … narcissistic,” she says. “I want to have a new person to have my beautiful blue eyes. How wouldn’t that be nice? So that’s completely selfish and put those kids in such a world which is already dying, burning … that’s pretty selfish. Way more selfish than being considerate and not having kids.”

I looked her up because I had a hunch and yes. She is an Ashkenazi Jew, her maiden name is Verena Eleonore Maier.

The worst misogyny I've experienced has come from women who label themselves "feminists".
The idea that raising children isn't "real work" and that I magically became an opinionless slave for my husband the moment I gave birth is obscene.
