Yeah, but that is not is a country 3 hours from our border. This is like saying we won't do shit for Canada because a hurricane leveled Nova Scotia. I get what you are saying, but you are speaking past the larger point. Which is we are going to help come what may. and by force if necessary. So its good in this circumstance force will not be required.
Yeah but it’s not like the Canadian Military, all 12 members of it, has the capability to confiscate all of the aid heading to Nova Scotia.

Citizens denounce that in La Guaira, collectives and officials of the Bolivarian Police would be intimidating civilians who participate in the rescue efforts after the earthquake.

In addition, those making the denunciation claim that there would allegedly be orders to prevent the rescue of missing or injured people in order to include them in the list of those who died in the earthquake.

Chavista regime ordered the dismantling of collection centers set up by María Corina Machado's party. The police claim that only the city hall and the PSUV have authorization.

Mass evacuation in la Guaira due to a supposed Tsunami warning
Fake news.

Has there been any reports so far regarding a possible death toll? I know it's very early but some of the reporting i've seen varies wildly from 1,000 up to 50,000 and i feel like if it was anything close to the latter that this thread would have a lot more than 8 pages.

From reading the retard Al Jazeera and BBC its just trump bad. Therefore its all a psyop and the discombobulator hit Caracas. The Western news media doesn't give to shits about the average Joe. Just Trump big bad.

Theres 46,000 something 'missing' meaning they are trapped under rubble or dead. The emergency response to improve the survival rate is painfully slow, so expect the death toll to rise. You may as well consider those 46,000 people dead. Cell service and internet is also shit so information is trickling out.

The oficial report is around 3 hundred. But that report is bullshit. I expect them to hide the true digits till the last moment, like they did in 2017 with starvation and 2020 with covid.

Last official reports was 235 deaths and close to 4300 injured. Expect these numbers to increase significantly.

As for our niggas @Jose Beaner Luna and @Cubanodun , a friend of mine was recently close to 24 hours without powers and cellphone signal remains spotty due to damages done by the earthquakes. Niggas could still show up, fingers crossed.

I don't live near the most affected areas, so I did feel the quake, but it wasn't more than some moderately terrifying shaking here. In fact, at first I wasn't expecting it to be that bad and destructive, then reports started coming in, and it ended up being apocalyptic.

This quake in particular was something geologists warned about for years. The Bocono fault was under two centuries of stress and a big earthquake in this country wasn't an if, but a when.

The worst hit area is Vargas, a coastal state. The soil there is probably the worst soil you could ever build on, and yet the area was full of medium rise towers and hotels. It's also prone to natural disasters, the 99 Vargas tragedy was the worst natural disaster we had since the 1812 quake. And to boot, there's a large fault under Vargas as well. This shit was horrific and it left me scarred, but it was brewing for a long time.

The remains of the building where a friend of a friend was living, she's under the rubble it seems. 30 hours in and the heavy machinery required to clear it up has yet to show up. So far the neighbors were able to remove some debris but there is only so much you can do by hand.

EDIT: In less tragic news, big guy has calmed enough now that he's eating and drinking from his bowls and exploring the hotel room.

I’m only seeing videos now. I was expecting worse, and I’m happy it isn’t near that expectation. My YouTube feed, yesterday, showed some dude that was expecting more than 10k from a previous cluster of earthquakes that happened years before. Seems like they built their buildings to resemble the ones in Japan. Below is the video I saw yesterday. RIP to the the dead, hopefully everyone can be accounted for.

I'm not sure how to explain this without being insulting, but the country is paralyzed by the scale of this disaster. There is spotty Internet connectivity and people are spending their time trying to dig neighbors, friends, and family from multi-story building collapses.

Their priority is not posting on Twitter or whatever. The length of a KF thread in no way reflects the scale of a disaster in a country with already stressed infrastructure.

Actual Geologist Geologyhub with some analysis.

For those commenting on how low the "death" count is so far. Look at missing. Which is around 45,000 last I looked. Now many of those may just be people with no access to the phone network. The majority will almost certainly be people trapped of crushed under the rubble. These were densely populated city areas. 10 story apartment buildings and hotels pancaked down. My ballpark wild assed guess is the final death toll will likely end up somewhere around 30-35k dead.

Shawn Wilsey another good earthquake guy

These two are more the mechanics of what happened. And what some of the USGS estimates are for the potential for death and destruction based on some actuarial charts.

These poor people are entering into their second night with no external help from Caracas. They have got to be scared and angry. Has the President addressed the Venezuellan People yet? And has the national Disaster Response Agencies been heard from yet?

You know its a really terrible disaster when even the exiled opposition doesn't try to politically weaponise it. I don't know where Venezuela was going, but it horrific to see this happen to it regardless.
