Crime Police rescue more than 400 cats from being eaten in Vietnam in a bust of a major animal theft ring - “The sad truth about this trade is that thousands of cats every month are being stolen, trafficked and slaughtered for meat across the country,” said Phuong Pham, the country director of the Humane World for Animals in Vietnam.

Police in Vietnam rescued more than 400 cats in a major bust of a cat meat crime ring last week in Ho Chi Minh City, and at least 40 of them have been reunited with their owners.

However, following the dayslong police operation, several of the cats died because of the harsh conditions they were found in, animal welfare groups said. They didn’t elaborate or provide an exact number on the cats who didn’t make it.

Since the operation, veterinarians and volunteers have flocked to care for the cats at a temporary rescue center set up at a facility run by the Ho Chi Minh City Criminal Police Division.

“People who lost their cats can come to the police station to identify their pets and help the police with the investigation,” police official Nguyen The Bao told the state-owned Tuoi Tre newspaper.

This operation is “a sobering reminder of the enormous scale of Viet Nam’s cat meat trade,” according to Karanvir Kukreja, who leads a campaign against dog and cat meat consumption for the international nonprofit Humane World for Animals.

Local media also reported that the Ho Chi Minh City police investigation into a spate of pet thefts resulted in the arrest of nine people

During the operation, police raided a yard and uncovered 45 cages containing around 400 live cats and four ice-filled foam containers holding approximately 80 dead cats. About 20 live cats were also recovered at a separate location, according to police, who said a kilogram of cat meat sold for around 70,000 Vietnamese dong (around $2.70).

The operation, with a total of more than 500 cats seized, was one of Vietnam’s largest cat welfare cases in recent years, media reports also said.

The suspects admitted to trapping and collecting cats across south Vietnam over the past three years — in Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s largest city, as well as in the cities of Tay Ninh and An Giang, police said.

“The sad truth about this trade is that thousands of cats every month are being stolen, trafficked and slaughtered for meat across the country,” said Phuong Pham, the country director of the Humane World for Animals in Vietnam. “Thankfully, these survivors escaped.”

Several of the rescued cats were pregnant, leading to kittens being born in police custody this week, she said.

Chris Gindelhumer with the nonprofit Vietnam Cat Welfare, who is helping care for the rescued animals, said he “saw quite a lot of tears in the last few days.”

“It’s really beautiful to see how many Vietnamese families are coming, looking for their cats,” he said. “But it’s also heartbreaking because many families were looking for their cats and didn’t find them.”

Many veterinarians and volunteers are working around the clock for the cats, Gindelhumer said.

Consumption of dog and cat meat is legal in Vietnam. Vendors must have permits to validate the animals’ origins. But certain cities like Hoi An in central Vietnam are working with global animal welfare groups to stop dog and cat meat consumption in the city.

Not long after South Korea’s 2024 ban on dog meat, Vietnamese officials said the government plans to rebuild parts of the legal system to better protect pets and the rights of their owners.

“This event surprised a lot of people and has raised awareness among many to stop consuming cat meat,” said An Pham, a master’s degree student and avid cat lover in Ho Chi Minh City.

This happened recently to a Chinese influencer who traveled around with his dog and made videos. He went on vacation where he couldn't take his dog. While he was gone, someone stole it, skinned it alive ("ANIMAR TASTE BETTAR WHEN IT SUFFEL, ANCIENT-A CHINESE SECRET"), and sold the meat for less than $50. He found out who did it, confronted them, and they were apathetic.

Civilization is a beautiful thing. Most Asians truly aren't civilized and are lower than the animals they abuse, especially the Chinese. Never forget that you are literally better than them.

They still eat barbecued spiders in Vietnam because it's something left over from when they were starving during the war. Some of these starvation foods become delicacies over time

operative word here is "some." afaik the spider eating thing is just a tourist thing that one village does. people who eat them report that the hair on the spiders make them really hard to eat, it's kind of a showing off thing and I bet it would have died out by now without social media.

or just common foods. Just look at soul food.

Famine food/poverty food is not the same as peasant/serf/slave food. Soul food is an example of the latter moving into normal, unstigmatized diet, yes. There are many other examples, this is a super common change, because the determining factors in social status change so enormously over time. I don't like Veblen much but I think this is one place where conspicuous consumption theory explains a lot.

Famine food is different, famine foods almost never move into the totally acceptable normal food for everybody category, because they're nasty. Even when they do usually the preparation is so different you're not really talking about the same thing - this is what is going with lobster moving from prisoner slop to haute cuisine, prisoners were not getting nicely boiled lobsters with garlic butter, they were getting bowls of a gooey chowder kind of thing. The other factor that will cause a famine food to become acceptable is medicinal/nutritional beliefs, which is why modern western people will eat fucking pigweed, and apparently also why chinks eat cat.

Carnivores can be prone to harmful bacteria and parasites that also love to invade an omnivore body. Google scans of people who have had their muscle tissues eaten by such from eating bears and the like.
Wild animals of all kinds are overflowing with parasites. Say what you will about modern animal farming but it has 100% eliminated the risks of parasites. If someone gets trich or something else today its because they ate wild meat.

you have to beat and torture the dogs before you butcher them. Like the stress hormones infuse extra healing properties or some shit.
Any hunter worth their salt would tell you how important it is to make a quick, clean kill, or at least calm the animal down before you kill it, because adrenaline makes the meat god awful.
This just reads as a flavor preference to me.

I'm going to torture the shit out of some garlic later because it helps the allicin develop.
This will bother me not in the least because I disregard the suffering of things I consider food.
Sometimes I don't even kill it before eating it. Its terror and pain is delicious.

Be interesting to got to the Yulin Dog Festival and get one prepared traditionally for maximum authentic flavor, then a second one that you were nice to for a couple hours so it could be calm and comfortable when slaughtered, and see which one tastes better.
