Additionally, if you look at the Icelandic Women's Strike that she uses as inspiration, it wasn't the "sit back and sip wine while laughing at Hubby burning the chicken nuggets" she seems to imagine it was. The women prepared by doing things such as making sure there was food ready for their families, or ensuring everything at their workplaces was secure before closing. They also spent their "free" time in the streets or courthouses protesting for equal pay (and it was very unequal, despite that Icelanders overwhelmingly use unions).
Also helped that the strike was done for one single cause: to help push for equal pay being set into law, which was coming up on ballots later that year. Iceland itself only has around 400,000 people (about half that in the 70s according to Google). Much smaller scope compared to the almost 350 million in the US. As much as Polissa wants to lead the way to change, there is much more work that she'd have to do than a simple TikTok RSVP.

Polissa states that US has completely changed from when she was younger. Sure, she can recognize buildings and landmarks. The actual landscape is the same. The ideological and cultural shifts [by MAGA], though? All she feels now is despair at the thought of the country today. Felt this especially hard while watching the joy that the Mexican team had during the World Cup. If she can't even feel pride looking at her own flag or hearing the national anthem, what future or identity does she have now as an American?
Doesn't help that as a millennial, she had also been bamboozled throughout childhood into thinking that her generation was going to save the world, so to speak. Her generation failed; backwards ideology is destroying what little she still recognizes in her country. What's the point of hope, or pride, especially for her own country or people?

Polissa wanted only two things for her birthday this year: new clothes, and crab legs. The clothes she ordered from Shein arrived. While they fit, it's just barely and Polissa feels like shit. She has always been big (she wore 16/18 during the Heroin Chic 90s) and liked when HAES picked up popularity in the 2000s because she had more clothing options and a chance to celebrate her larger body.
However, HAES has gotten less popular now due to the increased use of GLP-1s. It was for the best; Polissa now blames her adopting of the movement on her 60 pound post-hysterectomy weight gain. The complications got to the point that she couldn't walk short distances without gasping for air and developing a heart condition. Tried two different GLPs: Ozempic and Mounjaro. Had to quit both after she landed in the ER from taking them.
Is at a loss of what to do next. She believes that her weight gain is genetic. All the people in her family are fat. Was suggested weight loss surgery, immediately shot it down. That's so extreme and she'll just gain it all back when she fails like everyone else she knows that had it. And that's assuming she's lucky and doesn't die from post-surgical complications like one of her loved ones. Is she just meant to be fat forever?
Maybe, maybe not. For now, though, screw it, she'll look forward to those crab legs. She only gets them on her birthday or anniversary with Joh. If anyone wants to give her grief for wanting a very rare treat, that’s their problem.
when the only thing you have to look forward to is eating, you’re going to eat past the GLPs. Feeling hungry isn’t why these girls eat, it’s their only source of entertainment.
