r/fuckcars / Not Just Bikes / Urbanists / New Urbanism / Car-Free / Anti-Car - People and grifters who hate personal transport, freedom, cars, roads, suburbs, and are obsessed with city planning and urban design

You know what? If urbanist fucks don't want to wear a helmet then we shouldn't force them to. When they crack their skulls and splatter brain goo on the pavement are we as a society really going to miss anything?

Wearing a helmet when you are a decent speeds of 15-30+ mph seems almost compulsory to me. The fact all professionals wear a helmet should be a dead giveaway to these clowns.
I'd say they're looking more at the heroic age of cycle races up to 1984 when people rode off mountains with flimsy rim brakes and nothing but race caps on their heads.

Those guys were badass. They drank wine instead of taking carb gels, smoked cigarettes before ascents to "open up the lungs" and rode on bikes that are absolutely laughable now. Also it wasn't as important for boomers to wear helmets as the lead already made them retarded

It's absolutely awesome. I never understood why people now spend shitloads of money on carbon bikes with remote control shifters and all that nonsense when they're not actually racing professionally and need to shave off tenth of seconds of time somewhere. I ride a heroic era bike because non-indexed shifters and steel frames are fun and ballsy. It's not like the carbonfags are even fast, I still smoke most of them on my 1979 mid tier road bike.

It's really funny because the carbon frames are actually too light to be UCI compliant so they're spending boatloads of money just to add weight back to the frame later in order to race. It doesn't make sense.

Why not just use a cromoly/alu frame and carbon everything else if you add extra weight after

And you can't argue for the strength of carbon frames either like you can with a Ti frame because carbon fiber has bad notch resistance and also doesn't benefit from the impact and vibration absorption that Ti does. The reason why you buy a carbon fiber framed bike is because carbon fiber is cheap as hell to make but sells for a lot of money and is the official Digital Age Material. Much like how Aluminum was the official Space Age Material.

The only use case is triathlons, where they're exempt from UCI weight restrictions afaik. But those guys are weirdo pants-pissers so who cares

They aren't even good for those down hill guys either because once again, poor notch resistance. Same reason why carbon fiber wheels are generally a bad idea.

The spinergy carbons went hard. Unreliable, terrifying, would suffer catastrophic failure but just l👀k at them

I would be completely 100% okay with a caveat that exempted you from helmet laws as long as you had a whole aesthetic going on

Despite being violently French, this is what peak performance looks like.

I agree but is it really a good comparison? A car has crumple zones and a person without a seatbelt is still somewhat safe in case of a crash (at least if they don't end up getting ejected from their seat).
A small unevenness in the pavement is enough to cause serious brain damage and other injuries- and they are almost completely preventable by just wearing the helmet

It is, actually. Seatbelt laws are fucking gay and they just exist to give the cops an excuse to pull you over and fuck with you, same as helmet laws. Personal safety should not be the government's purview in instances where greater society as a whole is unaffected.

With that said, you're fucking retarded if you don't wear a seatbelt or a helmet, but that should still be your own retarded decision to make.

The problem is that they use every cyclist death to lobby for restricting cars, even though most cyclists deaths are the fault of cyclists, not drivers or infrastructure.

As long as they continue to do that, I have no problem with the state forcing them to be safe.
