FRISCO, Texas — Karmelo Anthony, the teen accused of fatally stabbing another teen, Austin Metcalf, at a Frisco track meet, has been indicted on a murder charge, officials said.

A grand jury indicted Anthony on Tuesday, according to the Collin County District Attorney's Office. A murder charge is punishable by 5-99 years or life in prison.

Anthony, a 17-year-old former student of Frisco Centennial High School, was arrested and charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of Frisco Memorial High School student athlete Austin Metcalf in April at a track meet in Frisco ISD's Kuykendall Stadium. He was released from jail later that month after his bond was reduced from $1 million to $250,000.

Anthony has claimed self defense in the case, which garnered national attention, heightening racial tensions and raising security concerns among everyone connected to the case, including both families and Judge Angela Tucker, who is presiding over the case.

"We know this case has struck a deep nerve — here in Collin County and beyond," Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in a statement Tuesday. "That’s understandable. When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core. But the justice system works best when it moves with steadiness and with principle. That’s what we’re committed to. And that’s exactly what this case deserves."

Anthony's attorney, Mike Howard, called Tuesday's indictment "an expected and routine step in the legal process."

"Karmelo and his family are confident in the justice system and the people of Collin County to be fair and impartial," Howard said. "Of course, Karmelo looks forward to his day in court. It's only in a trial that a jury will hear the full story, one that includes critical facts and context that the grand jury simply didn't get to hear."

Howard again raised Anthony's self defense claim in his statement Tuesday.

"We expect that when the full story is heard, the prosecution will not be able to rule out the reasonable doubt that Karmelo Anthony may have acted in self defense," Howard said. "Self defense is a fundamental right guaranteed every American."

Metcalf's father, Jeff Metcalf, told WFAA in a statement that he's "pleased that we are moving forward."

“With the first degree murder indictment, it now goes into the court system," Jeff Metcalf said. "I fully believe that justice will be served for Austin Metcalf. I look forward to the forthcoming trial. But it will never bring my son back.“

Under his bond conditions, Anthony is required to wear an ankle monitor and ask permission to leave his home. If Anthony violates any conditions of his bond, he will have to return to jail. He graduated and received his high school diploma in May, but did not attend the ceremony, WFAA previously reported.

Anthony allegedly confessed to the stabbing immediately after he was arrested, claiming he was defending himself from Metcalf, officials said, as WFAA previously reported.

A witness reportedly told police that Metcalf told Anthony he had to move out from under the Memorial High School tent. Anthony responded by opening his bag and reaching inside, WFAA previously reported.

"Touch me and see what happens," Anthony told Metcalf, according to a witness.

Metcalf reportedly then touched Anthony, the witness told a responding officer, and Anthony told Metcalf to punch him and see what would happen. Soon afterward, the witness said, Metcalf reportedly grabbed Anthony to tell him to move. At which point, the affidavit continues, Anthony reportedly pulled out what the witness recalled as a black knife and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest before running away.

The deep tension sparked by the incident has raised concerns that the case may be tried outside of Collin County. Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis told WFAA that the judge will make that decision at the time of trial.

Remember by Texas law, his penalties are capped by his age. Something like 30 years max, I think? Don't hold me to that number.
nah it's between 5-99 years it was discussed in the thread a little while back
latest witness is probably the weakest today if he did change his official story, but it doesn't really matter that much

I want to reiterate this as I did yesterday: there is no cap for his age because in Texas, 17 year olds are charged as adults. There is no cap. He is eligible for life in prison.

"Texas Penal Code - PENAL § 8.07. Age Affecting Criminal Responsibility

(7) a capital felony or an offense under Section 19.02 for which the person is transferred to the court under Section 54.02(j)(2)(A), Family Code.
(b) Unless the juvenile court waives jurisdiction under Section 54.02, Family Code, and certifies the individual for criminal prosecution or the juvenile court has previously waived jurisdiction under that section and certified the individual for criminal prosecution, a person may not be prosecuted for or convicted of any offense committed before reaching 17 years of age except an offense described by Subsections (a)(1)-(5).

(c) No person may, in any case, be punished by death for an offense committed while the person was younger than 18 years."

The only thing he is not eligible for is the death penalty, which is extremely unlikely to have been considered anyway.

Wouldn't take a defense knife without one

Fucker saved my life
I’m far from a weapons person, but I keep a knife like this one in my car, in my nightstand, in a purse or backpack that I’m carrying.

They’re useful outside of defense, and it’s better to have one and not need one than need one and not have one.

It's looking really good for the prosecution. Outside of your retarded and or horny female activist juror he's looking at serious time if not life.

I'll wait to see the knife, but even with a factory edge, most inexpensive to mid-range 3.5" liner locks would be plenty rigid to reach the heart though the ribs if the victim isn't fat.

Daily mail is saying one of the teens testified that Anthony had the knife out and in his hand already when he was shoved.

they are also saying that three people got kicked out one for calling a sheriff's deputy a racial slur lmao

I hate how different reporters are giving different details because their quote of Metcalf saying something along the lines of "we're in Frisco you don't have anything." before getting stabbed is perfect
Edit: neither the fox website nor daily mail say that he had Metcalf's backpack in his backpack so I do not think that is the case

Here's the video from DailyMail of one of the people removed from the courthouse.

BLACK COMMUNITY RESPONDS: Reporter @Savsays got first insights from some of the supporters outside of the Karmelo Anthony trial.

“Better mine than yours.”

One woman, who states that she was there to report, shared that if evidence shows that Anthony was not acting in self-defense, she does not believe the Black community would accept that, stating that “they stand by ours regardless.”

A Black minister standing outside of the courthouse stated that the American justice system is the “final frontier of racism and it’s legalized here.”

Throughout the week, supporters of Anthony have been very tight-lipped and unwilling to speak with the media. The woman mentioned above was told to stop speaking to our reporter by one of the Black Panthers present.

Opening statements began on Thursday, and the trial will continue into next week.

I recommend utility knives wherever you can stick them, that is the only knife I ever had to "use" it has more "combat features" than a standard folding knife

dual thumb rests for better grip locking plate for the locking piece. If Anthony was carrying this fucker we might actually reach common sense assault knife territory.
Both Colonel Rex Applegate and William E. Fairbairn were pioneers in close quarters armed and unarmed combat. Colonel Applegate was even inducted into the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame at the 1994 Blade Show. Look them up some time and you are sure to be impressed by their accomplishments.

Thank you for the recommendation!

The ones I carry with me and in my car also have a seatbelt cutter, which is nice for “it’s a tool not a weapon” etc

I don't want to derail the thread, but this right here is the problem with the black community. They don't care that this kid is a killer, they only care that he can't lose to whites.

Luckily, doesn't seem like there are too many, but if he is convicted, which is likely to happen, there will be chaos.

Very welcome, respect state laws and all that jazz, but I say have BOTH. To try to steer my knife sperging back on topic but was the condition of the knife mentioned? chips, broken blade, the knife is just failing apart? The quality of the blade doesn't determine if you can stab 1 person in the heart its indicative of it can be done again.

Another minor witness the source I'm using says 3rd but I think it's the fourth

The prosecution called a third minor witness to the stand, a 17-year-old from Memorial High School. He held a yellow stress ball in his hand as he testified.

The witness said both his mom and his sister were at the track on the day of the incident. His sister was on the track team, and his mother was working concessions. The witness said his father had died recently, saying he was "murdered by some man in California."

He said he plays running back on the football team, and that he was supposed to be at a football camp today and missed it.

The witness testified that he was at the tent putting on his shorts when he saw Austin talking to Karmelo. He said his sister was also under the tent. He described what he saw during the incident, similar to what previous witnesses described.

He said after the stabbing, he and his sister ran, saying that he wanted to protect her.

"Stuff like this never happens," the witness said, "not in Frisco."

"You cared a lot about [Austin], didn't you?" the prosecutor asked.

"Yes, sir," the witness said.

The witness said when Austin died, he lost "one extra person who believed in [him]."

When describing the interaction between Austin and Karmelo, the witness said that Karmelo "provoked" Austin. The state drilled down into the witness's use of the word "provoke," asking whether he understood its legal significance. The witness says no, but that he thought it was the right word for what he saw.

The witness said his sister will not testify because what she saw "shook her more than it shook [him]." The witness's mom will not be testifying, either.

He testified that Austin told Karmelo, "I'm not going to fight you at a track meet," during the incident.

The witness, like previous witnesses, told the jury that Austin did not want to fight, that Karmelo was the aggressor, and that the stabbing was not done in self-defense. Yet another witness who says Metcalf barely touched Anthony.

During cross-examination, the witness reenacted Austin's push with Shook, demonstrating a one-handed "touch" on the shoulder before Karmelo stabbed him.

poor kid and his sister were there. Interesting the prosecution asked him if he knows the legal definition of provoke which duh a kids not gonna know that, but I know what I seen

What the fuck is she drinking?

daily mail quote from one of the kids
The next witness called to the stand, a 17-year-old Memorial High School student who cannot be named, ran track with Austin Metcalf and was under the tent at the time he was knifed by Karmelo Anthony.

He testified that Anthony attempted to provoke Metcalf who responded: 'I'm not going to fight you at a track meet, dude.'
