I heard GrapheneOS won't be affected by this, so I plan to get a pixel once the restrictions fully roll out. Or the Motorola, if it is even released in time.
It will not directly affect Graphene OS, but it would practically destroy the third-party app ecosystem as the people that design these apps probably will not even bother anymore if Google locks down Android, leading to few or no apps that you would be able to "sideload" as the number of people who know of and use Graphene OS is a tiny fraction of the Android userbase.

Also, in blocking sideloading, Google might also decide to lock down the bootloader of Pixel phones much like how Samsung does with its newer phones, making it impossible to flash custom OS like Graphene or Calyx on them anymore.

The fact that Motorola is developing a dedicated Graphene OS phone is great, but knowing how spiteful and petty Google is, Google might require that you install some sort of spyware/adware package from it on your Graphene phone in order to access certain common apps like a lot of banking apps.

All the more reason to switch now and disable automatic updates.

My bank app still works but I honestly don't use it, I just do everything in browser or at the ATM.

I'm beating the same drum but every time one of these companies succeeds in locking me out of a "service" because of the OS/browser/adblocker/antitracking I'm running, my life gets better, not worse.

I am gradually becoming convinced that smartphones and maybe even the internet itself have been a net negative. There are indisputable benefits like GPS and constant mobile access to all the world's knowledge when you're trying to solve a real problem, but there are also many many things that affect us in subtle and pernicious ways that taken in aggregate might outweigh the positives at this point. There's the obvious stuff like overstimulation, parasociality, echo chambers, propaganda, surveillance, censorship, the toaster problem, etc. But also sutle things, like how being constantly contactable and interruptible has changed our daily lives and mental states, or how having constant access to easy answers disincentivizes critical thinking and problem solving and brainstorming and conversation. And the many, many modern problems that are downstream from the fact that we've allowed all our communication to happen through proprietary platforms.

Point being, consider how much you're actually missing out on if Jewgle builds you out of their walled garden, because I'm not convinced most of it even constitutes a loss.

But I'm just a retard with a blue collar job and blue collar hobbies.

Yes, Google is finding almost every nook and cranny to place advertising. Calling them greedy is too kind at this point.

Google crushed competing video sites by running Youtube at a loss for years. Now that their competition has been banished, Google is gouging the hell out of consumers. It’s almost as if Youtube is being run like a monopoly…

why did you post some random ai jeet video

I don't like how Google does NOT have a support number.
Yahoo! had one back in the '10s, but that "help" line disconnected after hours of being on hold. The website suggested "asking the community" -- posting on Yahoo! Answers -- as a "solution" to issues. But even that's better than no phone line, and probably some "AI" bot like Google probably does. Either way, it shouldn't be that way with the BS.

The crazy thing is that YouTube is still better that regular television.

I want to avoid using Google Services completely, so I use lineage OS.
Does anyone know of a good way to patch android apks into not requiring google services? I've downloaded patches in the past, but they are all kinda shady and I would prefer to make them myself.

Google just sent me an alert for "suspicious activity" regarding traffic from an "untrusted browser" on my own PC in my own home. Probably because of the suite of adblock/antitracking/antifingerprinting extensions.

Congratulations retards, you have succeeded in ensuring that I will never ever sign into your services with my preferred browser ever again. Instead you'll be segregated to a dedicated browser I never use for anything else. Because that's what you want apparently. Enjoy receiving even less data about my browsing habits.

I will also be running an adblocker in that browser.

lineage os + micro g.

I am forever upset that "literally just installing an application" is now derogatorily labeled "Sideloading". As if you aren't supposed to be doing it.

The real irony is that every single google cancerware on an android device is itself adware or 'sideloaded', isn't installing through a playstore or other store "Sideloading?". If I install an APK is that 'Direct loading'?

Complete shit.

The thing is people barely install anything.

Their phone needs to do a handful of things, call people, send messages, take pics, and maybe internet and games.

That's it. As long as android provides like 4 apps 99% of people literally won't notice a difference.

People aren't going to know about side loading because they aren't even. aware of "installing".

Installing an ad blocker takes 20 seconds and requires absolutely basic knowledge and it is beyond most people. Instead they pay YouTube (owned by Google btw) money to not run ads for them.

Technology is a black box to most people. If it does what they expect it to do that is as far as they think about it.

While that is good, I've downloaded apks that were patched to not even require MicroG, and they were also patched to remove DRM that MicroG is not compatible with. They were from sketchy places though, so I want to know how to do that myself.
I'm assuming that these patches were outsourced to be made en masse by some random jeet/russian for a couple of scheckels, so they can't be too hard to make, right?

Look into making your own patches with Morphe. I fucked around creating some custom ones myself back when it was ReVanced, mostly just to remove ads and some basic telemetry from a few simple applications.
So basically:
  • adb to pull APKs from your phone, but that may require you to merge split APKs, use another tool to merge them.
    • Or, you can use this on your phone to extract + merge in one step then just copy the APK off.
  • JADX to open up the APK on your phone to find things of interest.
  • Look at the current patches that exist and the skint tutorials on how to make a fingerprint + bytecode patch. (Also look at the older but larger repository of ReVanced patches, but be aware they may be slightly off/use a different syntax - for lack of a better word - as they would be from before the split and the DMCA etc)
    • Most patches are simply 'find a function by using the unique details (function name, variable types, return type or a combination of these/more etc)' and then just stubbing it out/returning early. One of the results I had was literally a boolean function named 'adsEnabled' so I simply replaced the first line with the equivalent of 'return false' to get my desired result.

Google image search is so fucking dogshit now. Like I know every single year it gets worse and worse but it is straight up worthless now. I tried to search for a twenty five year old Azumanga Daioh meme that has been circulating and proliferating across the web for a quarter of a century and I swear to god the first 30 results were all video thumbnails from either instagram, tiktok or facebook. Nothing else. None of them being what I was looking for, obviously. So I added -instagram -tiktok -facebook and was left with almost exclusively t-shirt ads disguised as search results. Absolutely nothing even in the ballpark of what I was looking for.

I hope every single "person" employed at Google in any capacity gets deported to Haiti.
