I feel like it has already happened to a degree. I remember a period (I would say roughly 2017-2021) when there was a huge influx of these types of "stories", particularly outside of mascot horror, with a whole bunch of lore-bait and no obvious narrative. Boneworks and Fortnite are what come to mind for me. It was obvious to me that they did this to try and ride the success that FNAF had.I wonder when the backlash against loreslop is going to happen. I know it will always appeal to a particular audience of autists but the idea that every new media property with an extremely online fanbase has to have a Silmarillion worth of lore behind it is completely retarded.
Then this whole trend died out (deservedly, might I add, shit was really annoying) as quickly as it popped up.
There's no obvious backlash because this stuff never really took off in the first place. There's a reason why ARGs and web series tend to stay niche internet things. Worldbuilding and mysterious lore for theory channels to latch onto are not a replacement for an actual narrative with characters and writing that people can follow. People don't give a single shit about lore if they don't have a vested interest in it to begin with; it can't get you to care about a setting the way a narrative can.
I would call TADC and company derivatives of this whole fad, sure, but I don't know if it's really gone "far enough" that you're gonna see pushback on this aspect of the show. Maybe there will be some creature that spawns out of Loreslop that'll demand the backlash it'll inevitably deserve.
