I think that the argument if one studies Science is nuanced but clear. Unless it has a disease, the fetus will develop into a human. It is just not sapient yet. However there are many valid reason to abort it, like downs, eugenics, father is a nigger rapist and mom is a crackwhore, but if you categorically put "not able to converse with you" as a bar for human-ness, than that means anyone in a coma is fair game too. Leftists say it takes resources from the mother and it is a parasite. A child, or elderly person also does that, so I don't think that works.

I'm not a fan of welfare myself. Particularly the way most places in america currently handle these programs.

However I do think some places have done it well, and we have even done it well in this country at certain times in the past.

The core of it comes down to this. It should never be the sole thing anyone relies on to get by long term. Having a system that allows people to stay on it indefinitely, and even incentivizes exactly the opposite of what it should. Essentially what welfare should be is a safety net to make absolutely sure people don't end up on the street corner if they have things happen outside of their control. It should only last a limited, but reasonable amount of time, and it should give incentives to people who actually are trying to do the right thing and lift themselves up. There should also be strong penalties for people who do try to game the system.

As a libertarian, I think the better solution will always be private charity or association's that are created by a community. Where everyone willingly comes together and provides for the shared safety net. Besides it avoiding the corruption and inefficiency that is inherent to any government run program like this. It would be carried out by people that actually care about the people around them. Instead of people just going a government job. But that's a whole different topic and I'm not under any delusion that we are ever going to move to a system like that in America. But I do think that is the better way. Especially because people can take money from the government without feeling like they are putting a burden on anyone to them it's just "the system". In a mutual aid society, or something along those lines it takes away any illusion that they are relying on the work of other people. Which is fine in the short term when people truly need it but long term is a problem.
