Whomp is proof that Dobson could be a successful cartoonist if he chose to.
It has the same concept as SYAC: a comic about the daily misadventures of a cartoonist who is lazy, fat, ugly, disgusting, has no friends, has social anxiety and weird psychological hang-ups... pretty much Dobson with hair.
Also the art style is absolutely within reach for Dobson's skill level, if he stopped tracing for a couple of days and practiced a little to fix some of his most offensive mistakes.
The difference is Ronnie Filyaw can laugh at himself, and that's what redeems his character from all his shortcomings, and makes him relatable, even likeable.
On the other hand we have Dobson, a guy unable to admit he has ever been wrong (he's still trying to get the last word in arguments he had with random people in internet forums... after literally
decades!) He has to always portray himself as a perfect pure being who is the victim of this sinful world, and because of this he can never highlight his faults, even less make fun of them (unless these are faults that he thinks make him look good, like defending women too much).
Take this comic:
Why it has to be some made up strawman who says that? Dobson is well known to be a keyboard activist, so the comic could be him walking by himself past the homeless while tweeting about social justice. He could make fun of himself that way. Instead Dobson cannot resist making the comic about "ugh, other men, amirite?"
But paradoxically his obsession with looking "good" is what makes him look bad. Because if he had made the comic I described, we might laugh at the situation, but then we might be like "yeah, he's a lazy fuck, but I also could talk less and do more sometimes, I guess I'm a bit of a hypocrite too", which is what makes a character relatable.
Instead, because of how he presented the idea, what the comic does is immediately beg the question: "And what have
you done for the homeless exactly, Dobson? At least that guy is getting 10K reblogs, so his ideas are having some impact in the world. You do the same thing on twitter, but get 3 likes tops."
So at the end Dobson ends up looking more of a hypocrite than if he had made a comic highlighting his hypocrisy. And that's why he's so despicable.
