Prominent Orlando lawyer and Morgan & Morgan founder John Morgan will not jump into the Governor’s race, but he is working to create a new political party in Florida.
Morgan made the announcement on social media, saying people have been urging him to run for Governor after his work leading to two constitutional amendment initiatives
“There was really one way I would do it: if someone entered the race that I really had a problem with, and I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Morgan said in his message on X. “I’m not going to do it because Mother Time is getting away from me. I do like living in Hawaii. I do like my marijuana and I do like spending time with my grandchildren. So I’m getting ready to take my coat and tie off.”
Morgan added that he hopes “some great candidates” run for Governor, but “more importantly, I hope we in Florida can kick-start a real third-party movement in the United States.”
To make the case for a third party, Morgan argued that being independent with no party affiliation isn’t the answer.
“No labels doesn’t work because everybody wants to be a member of a team,” Morgan said. “Have you ever seen anybody walking around with a jersey with no logo and no name? Hell no.”
Morgan said he is sponsoring a contest with a $100,000 prize for someone to name his new party.
Morgan has previously gotten involved in politics by leading successful constitutional amendments to legalize medical marijuana and to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour.
“I do believe that my constitutional amendments raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour and legalizing marijuana has been more impactful than anything any Governor has ever done,” Morgan said. “So I am satisfied. Most things that happen in Tallahassee benefit the top 1%.”
Morgan thanked his supporters for believing him and brought a message of unity for Floridians, saying, “Most of us agree on most things.”
