I think I'd like the idea of "loan forgiveness" a lot more if, instead of having the taxpayers pick up the debt, we simply told the banks that they aren't getting that money.
That's what bankruptcy is. Allow student debt to be dischargable again and the problem solves itself. It used to be.

The public still ultimately pays the price through increased fees, etc, but they'll stop making loans that can't be paid back and the borrower doesn't get to skate on their 4yr resort vacation with no consequences.

Some homeless dude called the ambulance at the train station yesterday for "chest pain." Bullshit artists know this will get them a bed. He signed out AMA at 3am because they wouldn't give him pain meds.

This faggot walked across the fucking street and called 911 again to go to a different hospital. I looked this 41 year old waste of oxygen dead in the eyes and told him he should seriously consider suicide. I made the best argument I could possibly muster up 18 hours into my shift. He disagreed.

Anyway my chief asked me this morning if I told a patient to jump in front of a bus. The exchange went like this:

"Lol, yup."
"Haha, nice."

God Bless America. Happy Easter. I'm going to sleep.

All because the banks can't prey on the stupid and gullible college students for 20 years anymore?
All because you've created the paradigm that politicians can just cancel the loan you gave based on popular outcry and not pay you back. Do you not realize that finance inherently operates on the faith of the court system to either extract payment or return the property in question?

If you say a loan company isn't getting paid back for a student loan, they stop giving out those loans because they all become extremely risky. Same would go for property like cars or homes if the government could forgive the loan and just not pay the company who lended the money back.

Attacking the lender is retarded. Go after the schools who set the costs of tuition.

the problem was introduced in the first place by government subsidizing the loans
what do you do when the person you are selling an education to has a theoretically unlimited ability to pay? you capitalize on it by raising the price
schools are just doing what makes sense for them
unfortunately, there is no way to punish thousands of bureaucrats and politicians for introducing loan subsidies, and the people that took out the loans are already being punished for their shortsightedness

You stop subsidizing, and more importantly, guaranteeing the loans by allowing bankruptcy.

Bankruptcy is extremely costly, so not everybody is going to default on their debt, but it requires the lender to actually consider the value of what they're lending for. This is a classic situation of moral panic and it is genuinely that easy to fix.

allowing bankruptcy for an education is a sketchy proposition
when you declare bankruptcy for debts on physical items, it is easy to prove that you have no capacity to repay, and have no assets to be liquidated
how do you determine if a person has retained no information from their education? do you take their diploma?
shitty situation all around

IMO the bigger issue is that doing so incentivizes poor behavior and punishes good behavior. In this case we probably just need to bite the bullet and expunge the student loans but only if the system itself is changed. Bailing out all student loans is just bailing out the banks and if you don't change the loan protections or subsidies you just guarantee it happens more and bigger because the market is now anticipating the next bailout.

But it would buy short term votes and our leaders are all clowns. So I suspect that when this eventually happens they'll make the worst decision and just forgive student loans but not actually change anything else.

Fake and gay.
We should pay off student loans by using the endowments of the schools they graduated from.

It's interesting that both parties had populist uprisings, and both party Establishments did everything they could to kill them off, leading to Bernie and Trump. The Dems fucked up worse, since they kept screwing over Bernie (with his help), which probably pushed some portion of their base to stop voting or even vote for Trump ultimately, while the Right was too incompetent to handle a rich asshole tycoon who could tell a joke and feeds off negative press.
Remember that the Left managed to suppress Occupy Wall Street by first encouraging shit heads to infiltrate the camps and do criminal shit to the OWS people to discredit the movement and then had the press just fucking blast Racism all the time to distract from it. The Left completely destroyed race relations in the US to give the bankers who caused 2008 cover.

I was groomed throughout my entire life by institutions and individuals alike to either pursue college or be a failure. By the time I finished my degree, the industry that I was told was lucrative and healthy and growing had evaporated overnight, jobs shipped overseas to people who are willing to do a worse job over more hours for worse pay. These institutions took my future from me, and they expect me to pay them for it? I'm not giving them a cent. The niggers can have this one if it means I get mine.
Bit of a late post, but this is absolutely the most pertinent point about student loans. Kids have been sold this lie by every single authority figure they should have been able to trust that they needed to get a degree in order to do anything for over thirty years. You can't pretend that this wasn't happening. And even when they got the degrees they found out all they had were student loans and degrees that got them $25/hour jobs.

The center can not hold on this.
