To be fair to history, a lot of abolitionists were just racists who hated the south and black Americans in general. They weren't against "slavery"(technically serfdom in most cases) out of sympathy for black people but instead they just wanted to strip political and economic power from the Planters. However, sometimes you can't really tell if certain abolitionists were racist or just really retarded such as in the case of John Brown who's terrorist attack would've resulted in black genocide in America if he succeeded. Yeah, real smart one there bud, start a race war between an unarmed population of humble serfs and an armed population of bitter rednecks. The serfs will obviously prevail.

Much of the problem was due to the fact that northerners didn't realize that the south had switched from slavery(as was practiced in the north over a century prior) to serfdom long before the Civil War.
