places like UAE and Saudi Arabia were cagey early on as war does not bode well for the rebranding both are doing to try to be touristy business hubs and not just gas stations. (the UAE is moreso like this but the Saudis have been trying to follow suit)

Incorrect. There was legal justification for bombing Iran and ACKing the Ayatollah.

The Ayatollah is not an elected leader chosen by the people, he is selected by a non-elected religious council that undemocratically took control of the country from the legitimate authority and thus, in the US' view of things, illegitimate. As he was recognized as the head of Hezbollah, an illegal terrorist organization, he was thus subject to righteous ACKing.

The US is bombing military and government targets, not civilian ones. They are explicitly targeting IRGC sites and basically anything they can claim is a threat to ACKing those targets. As the IRGC is a stated terrorist organization, they claim legal right to hit those targets. The US has offered terms that the ACKing will stop - give up the members of the terrorist organization that runs the country, stop trying to make nukes.
This allows the US to rules lawyer "no no no we are not bombing Iran the country. We are simply bombing the IRGC and the infrastructure that allows them operate inside Iran. Totally different".
You can mald about it being bullshit (because it is let's be honest) but in geopolitics possession of nukes is 9/10ths of the law.
Its the same metric the US can continue to drop ordinance unchallenged on Iran's sinking capital without either nation being at war.

It remains to be seen how well it will work out but the general thinking is this.

Iranian oil is still moving out of the gulf because surprise surprised no one is threatening those tankers. The oil is sanctioned to hell and back and as such is just going to China who is buying it at a hefty discount (they can pay significantly less for it because Irans other option is to have no one to sell to, China was doing similar with Venezuela before we removed maduro)

Simply blocking or taking the tankers by the US navy would be seen as aggression toward China, risking drawing them further into the conflict on Irans side among other possible consequences of that.

Dropping the sanctions on just this specific oil opens the door for the intermediary shipping companies transporting the oil to look and see "ok we can deliver this to China and get paid the mega discounted rate they were offering....... or we can send this to Korea or Japan or some other buyer and get paid the full value of the oil" with whatever money is getting paid for it presumably going into accounts or holdings that we can make it difficult to access by Iran for the forseeable future through the existing sanction measures.

So we either get a large share of that oil going to other parties in the world in need currently providing market relief, and if China wants to try and get their hands on any of it they will have to offer up the full price of it stripping them of the discount they were enjoying on that oil. likely a bit of both and both scenarios are seen as positive from our POV.

Mythical terms are the only terms that matter. This is at the core of the culture war in America's domestic politics and is at the core of why America is drifting away from Europe.

America, or at least, a ruling majority of Americans, still see Western Civilization in mythical terms. We still go to church. We still invoke the authority of God in our politics, and when we say "God Wills It", we actually mean it. Its not a rote colloquialism based on tradition. I understand Europe's intense frustration with America. America is not playing by "the rules". Its not acting "rationally". But the very concepts of what the rules are, and what is rational is based solely on a very shallow reading of history, human nature and bureaucratic middle management of the imperfect but most efficient being the highest good.

Ironically, the Persians are much like us Americans. They don't see the world the way enlightened European technocrats do either. This world is a battleground of the Gods, and the highest goal is the mythical transcendent to them. Just like us. Its why the Arabs are perfectly happy to be our camel jockey's and the Persians are not. This war was quite inevitable, and if we are being honest is one that has been fought for 40 years in the shadows. It has only become overt, now.

The thing is though, there is a future in which the Persians and the Americans do reach accord. The reason we are fighting right now is the similar way we view the world. It is also the reason why there is a path to peace. But first, we need to break the millenialist apocalypse cult controlling their institutions. Because simply put, the current ruling regime believes that paradise awaits at the end of the apocalypse and they are willing to sacrifice as many people as necessary to sate their own mythical goals.
