Turning the Persian Gulf, all the ME trade routes, and their neighbors*meh*, into a big irradiated crater. The disruption to trade would last an unforeseeable amount of time, and the US would have to simultaneously sweep it up while juggling our now crippled economy. And that says nothing of how fucked the world economy would become. That's why this was inevitable, because they we're about to be the string holding The sword of Damocles above the US economy and international trade. Not everyone will admit it, but no one wanted to live in that world.
