>The olympics is no place for nationalism
As a former devout lefty I can actually share some interesting perspective on this.
"nationalism" used to be one of my trigger words because I, and all of my associates, misunderstood it. And even when we did understand it correctly, that very definition is problematic for its own reasons.
In reality it nationalism just means that when given a trolly dilemma, you side with your nation over others. It's an acknowledge of the fact that nations are still a thing that matter and you ought to be loyal to. Obviously this fits the olympics perfectly.
Even that interpretation is seethe inducing to a hard lefty because you have to understand that we're working
backwards from star trek style global unity. One world government that gets along and shares everything and loves each other should be here already. It should have been here 40 years ago. And the only reason that it isn't is because mean hateful people are preventing it from becoming a reality.
The pragmatic reality of logistics, cultural differences, and the ultimate leftist kryptonite: human nature, is of course the real reason we aren't there yet.
You combine this with the power+privlege horseshit and browner/weaker countries are allowed to get away with a bit more, but powerful countries are absolutely not. ie: the USA must never feel pride because it might offend somebody from a lesser nation. Europe and Canada are allowed to feel pride only when it comes to contrasting themselves with the USA.
So when those hockey players represent America, proudly, unapologetically, and happily, they're throwing the average leftists depression right in their face. The awkward conversations they had with their foreign classmate, the shame they feel when some turd worlder calls them a nazi on instagram, the screaming chimps at BLM rallies, the crying child in the commercial... all of these things cause them severe pain and the hockey team acts as a heat sink as the cause of all that pain.
